Master Electrician – Road, Highway & Bridge
Position Overview:
The Master Electrician is responsible for overseeing the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems used in roadway, highway, and bridge projects. This includes traffic signals, street and highway lighting, power distribution, and electrical components of bridge and tunnel systems. The Master Electrician ensures compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC), Department of Transportation (DOT) standards, and state/local regulations. The role involves supervising journeyman and apprentice electricians, coordinating with contractors and project managers, and ensuring projects are completed safely, on time, and within scope.
Key Responsibilities:
Install, maintain, and repair roadway electrical systems, including:
Traffic signal and control systems
Roadway and bridge lighting
Power distribution systems for bridges and tunnels
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and related infrastructure
Interpret DOT plans, electrical schematics, and blueprints for highway and bridge projects.
Ensure compliance with NEC, DOT, OSHA, and state/local codes and safety standards.
Supervise and mentor journeyman and apprentice electricians.
Troubleshoot and repair electrical malfunctions to minimize traffic disruption.
Perform inspections and testing to verify system functionality and safety.
Coordinate scheduling, material ordering, and manpower requirements for field operations.
Maintain detailed records of permits, inspections, and work performed.
Collaborate with engineers, contractors, and project managers to ensure project alignment.
Enforce and promote a culture of safety on all job sites.
Qualifications & Requirements:
Valid Master Electrician License (state-specific requirement).
5+ years of roadway/highway/bridge electrical experience preferred.
Strong knowledge of NEC, DOT, and MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) standards.
Experience with traffic signal systems, lighting controls, and power distribution for infrastructure.
Ability to read and interpret DOT construction plans, specifications, and schematics.
Strong troubleshooting, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills.
Supervisory and leadership experience with field crews.
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including nights and weekends as required.
Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; CDL preferred.
Preferred Skills:
Knowledge of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and emerging roadway technologies.
Experience working on federally funded or DOT projects.
Proficiency with electrical testing and diagnostic tools.
Project management or estimating experience.
Work Environment:
Outdoor field work on highways, bridges, and roadways in varying weather conditions.
Work may include night shifts, weekends, and emergency call-outs.
Requires use of PPE and adherence to strict safety protocols.
Frequent collaboration with DOT officials, engineers, and construction teams.
Compensation:
$93,000-$110,240 per year
