Location: New York City (hybrid; on-site at schools/community sites as needed) Commitment: 8-12 hours per week (flexible scheduling) Compensation: Volunteer role About Mentor A Promise: Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing social-emotional learning (SEL), academic support, and mentorship to students ages 5-18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. We believe mentorship is a promise of consistency, compassion, and community—that can transform the lives of young people. We connect students with our mentors for in-person and online programs.
The Opportunity We are seeking a passionate, visionary Volunteer Program Director to guide and strengthen MAP’s expanding programs. This is a unique leadership opportunity to help shape the direction of a growing nonprofit and ensure that students facing housing insecurity have access to the mentorship and support they deserve.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership and Design: Develop and oversee MAP’s program strategy and implementation for K-12 students.
Adapt and strengthen trauma-informed, culturally responsive SEL and mentorship models.
Pilot new initiatives such as family engagement, youth leadership, and career pathways.
Team and Volunteer Management
Recruit, train, and support volunteer mentors and program staff.
Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and care.
Provide guidance through weekly check-ins, orientations, and professional development.
Community and School Partnerships
Serve as MAP’s program ambassador with schools, shelters, and community organizations.
Build and maintain strong partnerships that ensure program sustainability.
Represent MAP at community events and partner meetings.
Program Operations
Support scheduling, site operations, and youth participation tracking.
Ensure all staff and volunteers complete required trainings, including partner orientation.
Uphold safety, compliance, and youth protection standards.
Evaluation and Growth
Monitor program outcomes and impact, using data to inform improvements.
Support grant reporting, proposals, and donor communications with program insights.
Contribute to long-term program strategy and scaling efforts.
Qualifications
5 or more years of experience in youth development, education, social work, or nonprofit leadership
Strong knowledge of trauma-informed and equity-centered practices
Demonstrated success leading programs or initiatives serving high-need youth
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
Comfortable managing volunteers and building partnerships with schools and agencies
Organized, adaptable, and mission-driven
Bilingual (Spanish/English) strongly preferred
