Associate General Counsel – Tax

Provide legal advice and services in the areas of tax, estate and charitable planning, trusts, probate, and gift initiatives, with a focus on supporting the university's advancement office. Draft, negotiate, review and advise on a wide range of Advancement matters, including gift agreements, grant agreements, charitable solicitations, gift processing, donor restrictions, endowment modifications and related administrative practices. Assist with complex charitable giving instruments such as non-cash gifts and related issues; support university employees in corporate and other work of the Ohio State University Foundation; manage trust and estate litigation matters. Provide legal advice on transactional business and tax law areas, including unrelated business income tax (UBIT), qualified sponsorships, property tax, sales tax, excise tax, tax exemption and nonprofit laws (including Form 990 and 990-T). Coordinate tax advice with the Office of Investments on investment documents. Monitor changes to federal, state, and local tax laws; analyze and communicate relevant changes to affected units; assist in implementing required changes. Assist with responding to IRS audits, advise on real property tax exemption applications, defend challenges to exemptions, and manage probate court litigation as needed. Conduct legal research and analysis, draft and review agreements, and recommend policies and procedures to promote tax compliance; participate in other duties and special projects as assigned by the Office of Legal Affairs leadership. Qualifications
Required: Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school; member of the Ohio bar or eligible to practice in Ohio within one year or less. A minimum of six (6) years of legal practice. All university attorneys are expected to work at the highest professional level with integrity, judgment, discretion, and leadership characteristics such as teamwork, inclusiveness, calmness, and adaptability. Previous legal experience advising tax-exempt organizations related to tax, charitable giving, or estate planning; experience at a university is highly desired. Previous experience with public entities and public law issues (e.g., public records law and ethics laws) is also desired. Details

The Target Hiring Range for this position is $151,300 to $197,650 per year. Notice
