Overview
The External Carrier performs essential Supply Chain transfer functions between on and off-campus UnityPoint Health locations to support patient care. Daily couriers load, unload, secure and transport specimens, supplies, laundry, parcels, and written communications in a timely and safe manner utilizing safe driving principals.

Responsibilities Transport Coordination
Transport supplies, parcels, monies, laundry, instruments, small equipment, and written communication between on and off campus facilities served by UnityPoint Health. This includes hospital departments, physician offices, clinics, outreach clients including nursing homes and others as needed to maintain patient care while driving a UPH provided vehicle.
Loads, unloads, secures items in vehicle and sorts of materials carefully and accurately.
Maintains integrity of items for delivery, room temperature, refrigerated, or frozen.
If need to leave vehicle running while unattended to maintain temperature of cargo, ensures doors remain locked while away from vehicle.
Maintains pick-up and deliveries in a timely manner according to schedule or need of delivery.
Uses safe lifting, material, and equipment principals in handling of all items.
Completes reports manually or electronically as directed by supervisor. Examples: Retail Pharmacy, Lab Specimen, and/or Delivery documents.
Maintains current route sheet to ensure seamless transition between couriers and provide consistency for customers.
Communicates with customers and others in a clear concise manner.
Understands driving safely in winter road conditions are part of a courier’s responsibility. Deploys UPH and/or market policies to determine when to cease winter driving conditions and initiate customer communication protocols.
Adheres to federal, state, and local laws governing vehicle operations.
Completes training for safe handling of specimen including spills.
Utilizes computers and/or hand-held scanning units for a variety of tasks including but not limited to email, bar code scanning and completing learning modules.
Maintain valid driver’s license, self-reporting license and required infractions in computerized license database.
Maintenance
Drives vehicle safely and maintains vehicle to manufacturer maintenance recommendations.
Reports mechanical problems to supervisor in a timely manner. Assists in scheduling repairs.
Ensures the vehicle is clean, free of debris and interior parcels at the end of each shift.
Uses care when utilizing vehicle and/or loading equipment to prevent unnecessary wear and tear.
Ensures fleet gas card always remains in vehicle. Does not store in pocket.
Ensures the vehicle has substantial fuel at the end of each shift.
Qualifications
Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
Valid Class C Non-CDL (Illinois ONLY) when driving any work-related vehicle requiring this license.
DOT Hazardous material general awareness, security awareness, and function specific training.
within 90-days upon hire (must be supervised until initial training is completed)
every 3-years
Must be self-directed and assume responsibility for timely completion of job responsibilities.
Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions.
Effective communication.
Accuracy and have attention to detail.
Work well with other team members.
Spatial perception required to plan for space available in vehicles.
