Under the direction of the Estimator/Manager, the
Estimating Intern
is responsible for the successful assembly and completion of fabrication and/or installation estimates.
Qualifications
Education:
Currently enrolled in a construction management, architectural engineering, or mechanical engineering program preferred or the knowledge, skills, and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a high school diploma or GED.
Years of Relevant Work Experience:
1+ years of experience in a fabrication environment preferred.
Certificates/Licenses:
Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record.
Physical Job Requirements:
Required to sit, stand and move throughout Company facilities. Must be able to perform job responsibilities in an industrial, fabrication site, and general environment around heavy machinery and equipment.
Estimating Career Progression
Intern → Estimator → Senior Estimator → Chief Estimator
This is the progression through the various levels of estimating. Employees become eligible for promotion when they demonstrate consistent, reliable, and successful performance of their defined duties independently.
Key Activities
The responsibilities listed are for an entry level estimating position with our company. Throughout your internship, you will have the opportunity to be exposed to as many of these tasks as possible.
Understand Project.
Gain thorough understanding of potential projects by reviewing all available project documentation, discussing projects with customers or salespeople as applicable.
Prepare Estimate.
Utilize spreadsheets or other automated estimating software to establish detailed project cost estimates for all aspects of the requested project. Develop estimates utilizing the most advantageous/efficient practices. Obtain pricing from vendors and subcontractors. Achieve customer/Company expectations regarding turnaround time for all estimates.
Turnovers.
Prepare initial project documentation for “turning over” project to project team members. Participate in turnover meetings.
Maintain/Enhance Estimating System and Procedures.
Perform periodic reviews of actual vs estimated costs on key projects to help evaluate ongoing labor productivity and estimating accuracy. Participate in postmortem reviews of projects as requested. Adjust estimating system and/or procedures to continue to improve overall estimating accuracy.
Bid Tracer.
Enter bid requests into Bid Tracer in a timely manner. Communicate bid participation to customers. Track all status changes as they occur.
Take Offs.
Prepare periodic partial take-offs to assist Project Managers in forecasting cost at completion.
Participate in the development and implementation of Company
best practices .
