Summary: The Director of Human Resources is a strategic leadership role responsible for planning, directing and coordinating all human resources activities, policies and programs for the bank. This role serves as a key partner to the President/CEO and senior management team, aligning HR strategies with the bank's overall business objectives. The Director oversees a broad range of functions, including talent management, employee relations, compliance, compensation, benefits and training. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader who can balance strategic vision with day-to-day functional work, fostering an engaging and inclusive workplace culture. Serves as a member of senior management to assist in long-term planning.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Strategic HR Leadership:
- Develop and implement HR strategies and initiatives that support the bank's business goals, mission, and core values. Must be a strategic thinker, a collaborative partner, and an effective decision-maker who can build strong relationships across all levels of the organization.
- Talent Management:
- Oversee all aspects of talent acquisition, including recruiting, interviewing, and selecting qualified candidates for both new and existing positions.
- Develop and implement strategies for employee retention, performance management, and succession planning.
- Administer the bank's performance review program and annual salary planning in coordination with management.
- Compliance and Risk Management:
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of federal, state, and local employment laws and banking regulations, ensuring the bank remains compliant.
- Develop and update the employee handbook, policies, and procedures to align with legal requirements and best practices.
- Provide guidance to management on complex employee relations issues, disciplinary actions, and terminations.
- Compliance and Risk Management:
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of federal, state, and local employment laws and banking regulations, ensuring the bank remains compliant.
- Develop and update the employee handbook, policies, and procedures to align with legal requirements and best practices.
- Provide guidance to management on complex employee relations issues, disciplinary actions, and terminations.
- Compensation and Benefits:
- Oversee the administration of competitive and cost-effective compensation and benefits programs, including payroll, retirement plans, and health and welfare plans.
- Research, benchmark, and recommend changes to ensure benefit offerings remain competitive.
- Employee Relations and Culture:
- Serve as a trusted advisor and counsel to both management and employees on personnel issues.
- Foster a positive and inclusive workplace culture that promotes employee engagement and satisfaction.
- Act as a key resource for resolving disputes and addressing employee concerns in a fair and consistent manner.
- Training and Development:
- Develop and implement training programs for employees and managers on topics such as compliance, professional development, and management skills.
- Champion career planning and professional growth opportunities for staff.
- Administrative Oversight:
- Manage the HR department's budget and oversee the accurate and confidential management of all HR records.
- Utilize and optimize the bank's Human Resources Information System (HRIS).
- Prepare accurate and timely submission of all mandated federal and state reports, including, EEO-1, VETS-4212, Il Pay Equity Certification, and other required employment compliance reporting. Facilitate the completion of the annual Affirmative Action Plan.
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or a related field. A Master’s degree or HR certification (e.g., SPHR or SHRM-SCP) is strongly preferred. Five years of experience in a diverse HR role or ten + years experience in the Human Resources field, including leading an HR team. Experience in the financial industry is preferred but not required.
- Strong background in handling employee relations issues. Proven ability to conduct thorough investigations into complex employee relations issues, employee conduct, or policy violations.
- Knowledge of federal, state and local employment laws to ensure the organization remains compliant.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to develop and execute HR strategies that align with the organization’s overall business objectives and culture.
Physical Demands/Work Environment: Individuals must be able to move about, stand and have manual dexterity. The work environment is generally a well-lighted HVAC-controlled office. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
