Overview This recruitment is open to current career service Public Defense Attorney – Supervisors in the Associated Counsel for the Accused (ACA) Division of the Department of Public Defense. One Special Duty Assignment as Managing Attorney Preparation Program (MAPP) in the ACA Division. This assignment is anticipated to last up to two (2) years but may be extended or end early based on business needs. This recruitment will be used to create an eligibility pool to fill future Special Duty vacancies over the next six (6) months.

About the Position DPD is committed to the development and career progression of Supervising Attorney staff. In partnership with Teamsters Local 117, DPD has initiated the MAPP project to develop current staff for senior leadership roles and deepen the bench of qualified senior leaders. DPD will utilize supervisor levels to recruit, recognize, and retain talented supervisors who are interested in upward career progression and in strengthening their leadership skillset and experiences. Essential Job Functions and Duties MAPP participants are expected to fulfill standard supervisor duties and actively participate in learning and development assignments and on-the-job training tasks, including: Be the incumbent back-up to fill in for temporary vacancies as Managing Attorney. Assist the managing attorney with tasks such as: Verifying that all staff are evaluated on an annual basis. Drafting and disseminating division communications. Advising on policy and personnel matters. Supporting the Managing Attorney with planning and implementing employee engagement strategies. Serve as mentor to supervisors. Perform other duties as assigned. Standard supervisor duties include: Supervise attorneys, professional, legal and support staff. Develop, evaluate, train, mentor, and coach subordinate employees; ensure work conforms with professional standards and applicable statutes and county policies. In coordination with Managing Attorney and HR staff, conduct disciplinary investigations and impose discipline when appropriate. Provide mentorship to attorneys and others within the unit. Assign and balance workload among attorneys within the unit. Ensure unit employees are up to date on DPD policies and developments, relevant legislative proposals or enactments, and case law changes that bear on the practice area. Conduct performance evaluations and implement corrective and career development plans; support employees to improve. Act as a catalyst for problem-solving and conflict resolution within the unit. Possibly carry a partial caseload with strong legal skills as described. Maintain and update a computerized case-management system to track caseloads and assignments. Identify cases presenting ethical conflicts of interest for the Division. Work with the Director's Office to ensure staff have the training and resources needed. Actively support and promote DPD's mission and policies to strengthen public defense in King County. Be the backup for on-call attorneys. Other duties as assigned. Location, Schedule and Policies The position will be located at various ACA offices in Seattle and Kent. It is exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and not overtime eligible. The role may require night and weekend work as needed. DPD offices are located at the Dexter Horton Building, 710 Second Avenue, Seattle; Jefferson Street Building, 1401 East Jefferson, Seattle; and Meeker Street Building, 420 West Harrison Street, Kent. Rotations of work/location and/or practice area may occur based on business need. DPD policies, including Ethical Walls and Outside Work policies, apply. Union membership is with Teamsters Local 117.
