Associate Vice President of Finance – OIC of South Florida
The Associate Vice President of Finance is a key leadership role responsible for the strategic and operational financial management of the organization, which includes both non-profit and for-profit divisions. Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the AVP of Finance ensures the organization is well positioned in a dynamic, competitive, and mission-driven environment through the sound oversight of financial operations, compliance, and strategic planning. The AVP of Finance is responsible for the oversight of all fiscal operations, including accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, procurement, and AR/AP. This individual leads the Finance team, including the Senior Accounting Manager, and plays a key role in shaping the financial infrastructure needed to support the organization’s programmatic and business growth. This position also supports the financial performance and contract execution of the organization’s for-profit social enterprise, ensuring alignment with operational goals and revenue targets.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Financial Leadership
- Support the COO and senior leadership in longterm financial planning and sustainability strategies.
- Oversee the development of annual operating and capital budgets in collaboration with the President/CEO, COO, and Senior Management Team.
- Lead the implementation of financial strategies aligned with organizational goals, including funding diversification and operational efficiencies.
- Prepare financial forecasts, models, and analyses to support data-driven decisionmaking.
- Fiscal Oversight & Compliance
- Ensure the effective and accurate management of all accounting operations including general ledger, month-end close, reconciliations, and audits.
- Maintain and enhance internal controls to ensure compliance with GAAP, federal/state/local laws, grant requirements, and funder obligations.
- Oversee the production of timely and accurate financial reports for internal and external stakeholders, including Board presentations.
- Direct and manage the organization’s annual financial audits and the preparation of tax filings (including IRS Form 990 and for-profit tax returns).
- Departmental Leadership & Operations
- Provide leadership and oversight to the Finance team, including supervision of the Senior Accounting Manager, procurement personnel, and accounts payable/receivable staff.
- Establish clear departmental goals, priorities, and workflows to ensure high performance and accountability.
- Collaborate with Human Resources and Operations teams on organization-wide initiatives, including site expansion and operational planning.
- Ensure procurement practices are compliant, cost-effective, and aligned with organizational standards.
- Support to For-Profit Enterprise
- Partner with COO and CEO to provide financial oversight and P&L management of the organization’s for-profit social enterprise.
- Support contract negotiations, revenue analysis, and business development strategies.
- Develop performance metrics and dashboards to monitor operational and financial performance of for-profit activities.
- Organizational Planning & Change Management
- Support organizational change efforts by assessing, developing, implementing, and evaluating all financial elements of the organization.
- Facilitate the development and monitoring of integrated, strategy-aligned departmental work plans.
- Contribute to preparing the organization for ongoing evolution, expansion, and impact.
- Ensure clarity and commitment around financial goals and operations across all stakeholders.
- Internal Relationships
- Collaborate closely with the President/CEO, COO, Board of Directors, and key committees to support effective governance and financial strategy.
- Work cross-functionally with senior staff to align financial practices with programmatic and operational goals.
- Act as a financial thought partner to department heads and business units to enhance financial literacy and accountability across the organization.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; Master’s degree and/or CPA preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive finance and accounting experience, including at least 5 years in a leadership role.
- Demonstrated experience working within both nonprofit and for-profit environments, including oversight of fund accounting and business operations.
- Strong understanding of financial regulations, GAAP, grant compliance, and cost allocation.
- Proficiency in financial software and systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Blackbaud, or similar ERP systems); advanced Excel skills.
- Experience managing annual audits, developing budgets, and producing financial reports for multiple stakeholders.
- Proven ability to lead, mentor, and motivate a high-performing team.
- Strong project management skills; ability to manage multiple priorities, meet tight deadlines, and deliver results in a fast-paced environment.
