Job Summary

Provide strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the University's public-facing web presence and digital marketing infrastructure. This role oversees the Web Services team and manages university-wide web projects, ensuring alignment with institutional goals. The Director is responsible for the design and functionality of www.westernu.edu and other public-facing institutional websites, as well as the broader digital marketing ecosystem-including content strategy, search engine optimization (SEO), user experience (UX/UI), analytics, and integration of marketing technologies. The position plays a key role in shaping how the University is experienced online by prospective students, donors, and the public.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Individuals must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities-or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation-using some other combination of skills and abilities.

Extensive and diverse knowledge of web design principles, with strong experience in UX/UI design. Very strong experience with HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript. Strong experience using the WordPress CMS and in-depth knowledge of its architecture. Extensive and up-to-date knowledge of SEO principles and processes. Familiarity with modern marketing technology platforms and integrations (e.g., Google Tag Manager, analytics dashboards, CRM, marketing automation tools). Extensive experience in project management, team building, end-user training, and implementing short- and long-range goals. Experience in business process analysis and workflow optimization. Ability to lead cross-functional projects and collaborate with departments such as IT, Enrollment, Advancement, and Marketing. Understanding of accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG) and inclusive design practices for digital properties. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including technical writing of software specifications and end-user documentation. Analytical problem-solving, customer service, and negotiation skills. Organization and management skills. Ability to learn quickly, strategize, and use critical thinking to tackle management and administrative challenges. Understanding of professional digital marketing and communications principles. Experience translating marketing goals into effective digital experiences and tools. Commitment to data-informed decision-making and continuous optimization based on analytics. Required Qualifications

Education:

A bachelor's degree in Web Development, Computer Science, Digital Media, Marketing, Communications, or a related field is required.

Experience:

Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience directly related to web strategy, development, and digital marketing technologies. Minimum of 3 years of experience in project management, including leading cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

Master's degree in a relevant field such as Digital Marketing, UX Design, Computer Science, or Communications. Experience:

Experience in a higher education, nonprofit, or similarly complex organizational environment. Proven experience leading web and digital strategy in a complex organization, ideally within higher education or a similarly collaborative, multi-stakeholder environment. Expertise in front-end development using HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript, with the ability to guide technical staff and evaluate vendor solutions. Deep understanding of SEO best practices and implementation strategies, with a demonstrated ability to improve site visibility and engagement. Experience overseeing major website redesigns, web performance optimization, and cross-platform integrations. Strong familiarity with WordPress or other enterprise-level CMS platforms, including plugin management and theme architecture. Working knowledge of web analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics, Tag Manager), and ability to translate data into actionable insights. Awareness of web accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG 2.1) and commitment to inclusive digital design. Successful track record managing digital campaigns and collaborating across marketing, IT, and academic departments to align digital efforts with institutional goals. Strong understanding of the role digital experiences plays in student recruitment, donor engagement, and institutional branding.

Additional Considerations:

Experience managing and mentoring technical and creative staff. Demonstrated ability to lead digital transformation initiatives or major web redesigns. Experience working with external vendors or agencies for web and marketing solutions.

Perform SEO analysis and define plans to address web page visibility challenges. Key Responsibilities
