General Definition of Work Performs responsible professional work handling a variety of assignments related to planning and zoning. This position issues zoning compliance permits and ensures consistency of proposed subdivisions, change-of-uses, and new construction projects with applicable ordinances and state statutes. This position is responsible for responding to citizen inquiries. This position assists with the development of agendas and meeting documents for the Development Review Committee, the Board of Adjustment and the Planning and Zoning Boards for the City. This position includes identifying violations of the Land Use Ordinance and taking measures to obtain compliance. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Development Services.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks Organizing and managing planning, zoning and subdivision activities and administering and enforcing the City's land use ordinance
; maintaining records and files; preparing reports.

Reviews applications for zoning permits, sign permits, and all site plan types for accuracy and compliance with the City's Zoning Ordinance, adopted plans and ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal regulation. Inspects development sites for compliance with permits, ordinance standards, and applicable laws. Enforces the City's Land Use Ordinance. May assist with reviewing subdivisions, development proposals or plans for accuracy and compliance with the City's Subdivision Ordinance, adopted plans and ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal regulation. Serves as staff support for various commissions and boards; prepares and disseminates meeting agendas, related packet information and minutes; maintains records and tracks actions taken at meetings; conducts research on various related topics as requested. Receives and responds to citizen, contractors, builders, and/or developer questions regarding the City's Zoning Ordinance and Subdivision Ordinance. Assists with special projects regarding long range planning issues; conducts research on various planning issues; attends meetings. Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of the City's land use ordinance; thorough knowledge of state statutes as they relate to land use matters; general knowledge of legal procedures relating to the enforcement of zoning and other land use laws; ability to enforce ordinances and regulations with firmness, tact and impartiality; ability to balance a high volume of work accurately; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to present information in a clear and understandable manner; ability to deliver information with grace and tact; this position requires considerable use of good judgement and independent decision making. Requirements
Education and Experience : Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in planning, geography, public administration, business administration, or related field. Certification as a Certified Zoning Official (CZO) is required or must be obtained within two years of employment. Special Requirements:
