Job Description
JOB SUMMARY:
The Culinary Gardner reports to the Executive Chef and is responsible for the overall operation at the Sycamore Bridge Farm. The responsibilities include overseeing and assisting in all regular farm tasks and planning and managing the harvests.
ESSENTIAL/PRIMARY DUTIES:
• Oversees and assists in all regular farm tasks including, but not limited to, plant propagation, bed preparation, planting, weeding, fertility management, pest & disease management, irrigation, harvesting, hoop house management, native prairie, woodland, and vineyard management, and general maintenance
• Develops and maintains open and consistent communication with chef and kitchen staff about state of farm gardens and upcoming produce availability
• Plans upcoming seasons and acquiring needed supplies and maintains planting, production, and harvest records
• Harvests and delivers produce to the restaurant in a timely manner and in excellent condition
• Maintains all tools, equipment, buildings, hoophouses, and overall appearance of farm in order to ensure a safe, clean, inviting, and organized environment for staff and visitors
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED certification required. Must have restaurant experience along with a minimum of 2 years farm and gardening experience.
COMPETENCY and/or SKILL:
• Is or can become familiar with growing a wide variety of crops and best harvest standards
• Is or can become familiar with naturally grown and/or organic production methods
• Must speak fluent English
• Must have a valid driver's license
• Must be able to perform physically demanding tasks in all weather conditions
• Self-motivated with a strong work ethic and excellent attention to detail
• Knowledge of seed saving and other sustainable gardening techniques
• Must be able to problem solve and troubleshoot
• Must have experience with farm and garden equipment/tools and have basic computer/internet proficiency skills
