Position Summary:
The Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Supervisor provides leadership, guidance, and oversight to support the delivery of high-quality educational services to students with disabilities. This role ensures that programs meet all federal, state, and local regulations, fosters inclusive practices, and supports continuous professional growth for educators and staff. The ESE Supervisor collaborates with diverse stakeholders to drive student achievement and well-being in a supportive and equitable learning environment.
Minimum Qualifications: A master's degree or higher in Education or field related to special education
Valid endorsement in at least one area of special education from the Michigan Department of Education
Approved, or is qualified for approval, under Michigan Department of Education requirements for Supervisor of Special Education (full or temporary approval)
A minimum of five (5) years of successful certified teaching experience in special education, three (3) of which must be at the level
Knowledge and understanding of Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education and how it relates to the development, implementation and monitoring of ESE programs, services, procedures and processes
Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
Proficient with basic computer skills and web-based systems
Demonstrated leadership skills in past assignments
Experience and strong orientation toward urban school systems, preferred
Essential Functions: Serve as a resource for District staff, families, and students.
Interact with parents of students with exceptionalities for the purpose of defining and implementing services addressing the unique needs of eligible students.
Participate in the design and coordination of professional development activities to inform and equip staff with knowledge and skills needed in special education programs.
Assist with recruiting, recommending and assigning teachers and support aides.
Prepares written documents for the purpose of responding to inquiries and conveying information.
Maintain appropriate student and program data to support the development, presentation, and management of program budgets.
In collaboration with District personnel, develop and deliver parent and community training that promote cooperative and supportive relationships to improve the outcomes of students with disabilities.
Lead ongoing professional growth and development to remain current on research based best practices.
Provide assistance with the investigation, resolution and implementation of corrective actions related to complaints, due process hearings, and compliance monitoring.
Provide consultation to the ESE Leadership Team, principals, and other stakeholders regarding program operations.
Monitor/Expedite school-to-school, initial & out-of-district ESE enrollments.
Provide support to ESE teachers and support staff.
Create and model organizational tools for ESE teachers, administrators, and support staff.
Monitor/Process Transfers of Students with Disabilities (SEE Placements)
Update/Develop interdepartmental resources
Develop and implement regular meeting schedules with building school-based evaluation teams
Build staff capacity through mentoring, observation, and ongoing feedback
Promote and support inclusive practices
Advocate for resources and support that increase access to general education settings.
Collaborate with general education staff to foster a culture of acceptance and high expectations.
Offer coaching and consultation on instructional strategies, behavior management, curriculum alignment, and classroom accommodations.
Assist school teams with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), instructional planning, and student-specific challenges.
Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or designee.
