Construction Materials Special Inspector (Airport Specific) - Nashville, TN

The Special Inspector for airport construction projects plays a crucial role in ensuring the overall quality and integrity of the projects. These projects are complex in nature, which requires the Special Inspector to have knowledge of local building codes, FAA requirements, and the ability to review and understand project drawings, specifications, and submittals. The Special Inspector will monitor and observe construction activities to ensure adherence to these standards. The Special Inspector will work closely with the TTL Project Manager(s) and Airport Quality Assurance (QA) staff, providing accurate data and insights to support project success.

Key Responsibilities:

Field Monitoring and Testing:

Observe and monitor various construction activities, including subgrade preparation, structural fill placement, subgrade proofrolling, footing excavation, bearing evaluations, and concrete/asphalt quality assurance. General field oversight of the project while closely collaborating with the Airport QA staff to ensure the contractor meets project quality requirements. Perform detailed inspections of construction components such as reinforcement, post-tensioning elements, masonry, fireproofing materials, and wood framing to ensure they meet project plans, specifications, and relevant building codes. Ability to identify and provide technical decisions related to project challenges in coordination with project managers(s) and Airport QA staff. Perform additional specialty testing on projects such as floor flatness, Windsor Probe testing, reinforcement scanning, concrete coring operations, etc.

Data Collection and Reporting:

Maintain accurate and detailed field notes, documenting observations and test results. Prepare clear and concise reports summarizing field and laboratory findings. Utilize specialized software to log and analyze data. Prepare reports for delivery to the client for the Project Manager and/or Project Engineer to review. Assist with the preparation of other field staff members' reports for Project Manager and/or Project Engineer review.

Equipment and Safety:

Operate and maintain field and laboratory testing equipment according to company standards, manufacturer recommendations, and industry standards. Adhere to all safety protocols and participate in safety training programs. Maintain a clean and organized work environment.

Communication and Collaboration:

Promote seamless communication and teamwork:

Ensure effective interaction with all project stakeholders, give timely updates, and proactively resolve challenges. Cultivate strong relationships and support team development:

Build and maintain positive internal and external connections, while offering mentorship and supervision to fellow technicians. Lead and empower technical excellence:

Prioritize client satisfaction, and champion in-house quality control. Coordinate and deliver technical training to junior team members, serving as an advisor for technical team members. Contribute to project success : Actively participate in project meetings, precon meetings, and collaborate with project managers on financial aspects like invoicing and budget reviews.

Professional Development:

Pursue ongoing education to keep current certifications and improve technical skills and knowledge. Maintain necessary certifications such as ACI, DOT, ICC, PTI, and/or NICET as required. Gain laboratory experience working with soils, aggregates, concrete, and masonry materials. TTL will offer safety training and certification prep training, including:

10-Hour OSHA Construction Advanced certifications, including ACI laboratory certification, ICC Special Inspector certifications, and other industry-related construction certifications.

Qualifications:

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required; some college or technical training in the construction industry is preferred. Experience:

Prior experience of 3 or more years in construction materials testing and inspection is required. Candidates must hold a valid ACI Concrete Field-Testing Technician Grade I certification, Nuclear Gauge Radiation Safety Training, and at least one current International Code Council (ICC) Special Inspector certification or PTI certification.

Additional certifications such as DOT-related courses, Post-Tension Institute (PTI) Level I / II Unbonded Tendon certification, and NICET certifications are a plus. Ability to acquire additional ICC Special Inspector, PTI, American Concrete Institute, and NICET certifications.

Skills:

Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to work independently and especially in a team environment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Additional Information:

This position requires maintaining a balance between working in the field and in a professional office environment. Project schedules often determine working hours. Therefore, the candidate should understand that work hours may vary, including early mornings, late evenings, and night shifts. Some weekend work will also be required.
