This position is responsible for performing any electrical-related work under the direction of a journeyman-level electrician, including installations, alterations, inspection, maintenance, operation and repair, in and around the organization's facilities.

Responsibilities

Applies analytical and manual skills in inspecting, maintaining, installing, troubleshooting, calibrating, safety testing and repairing motors, generators, chargers, transformers, high voltage electrical systems and a variety of clinical, laboratory and research equipment including their component parts to ensure maximum and efficient operation.

Installs new systems and repairs existing wiring systems, electrical conduit, communications systems and related organization-owned equipment by adhering to necessary procedures that would ensure conformity with blueprints, OSHA specifications, JCAH and NFPA requirements, national and local electrical codes and requirements of other specialized codes and regulating agencies such as NCCLS, AAMI and CAP.

Maintains a variety of small electrical devices by repairing or replacing items such as hardware, lamps, fuses, sockets, ballasts, dropping resistors, contacts, coils, switches, timers, bearings, brushes, cords, and plugs as a matter of preventive maintenance and safety considerations.

Uses a wide variety of machines, electrical hand tools and test equipment commonly used by electricians such as but not limited to oscilloscopes, multimeters, voltmeters, cable pullers, lift equipment, relay testing equipment, stroboscopes, current leakage and safety test equipment, high voltage equipment, conduit benders, volt-amprecording meters, power factor meters, peak demand and watt-hour meters, surge and spike detectors and frequency drive testing equipment.

Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of the latest national and local electrical codes and if applicable all regulating bodies having responsibility for health care facilities.

Works with other trades in electrically related problems such as elevator repair, electric bed repair, fire alarm system maintenance and electrical aspects of electronic equipment.

Maintains and periodically updates equipment data history using computer software and applications.

Makes decisions about the appropriate equipment to use and the most efficient and effective manner to resolve any number of varying problems that they may encounter.

Interprets drawings select materials and determine the most effective type of construction, while making sure that the work meets Utah codes and regulations.

May be required to be on a weekly on-call rotation schedule 24-7 to perform emergency repairs at odd hours and during weekends, as needed.

Applies skills in performing processes such as the inspecting, maintaining, installing, etc.

Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.

Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.

Demonstrated knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety precautions for the service of clinical, electrical items.

Ability to be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to respond to emergencies that involve the campus distribution system.

Qualifications Required

Acceptance into and continued compliance with an approved apprentice education program. This will include classroom participation and on the job training, as required by the program.

A score of at least 70% on the Wiesen Test of Mechanical Aptitude (WTMA), taken prior to interview.

Current, valid State of Utah driver’s license.
Licenses Required
- Current license to practice as an Apprentice Electrician in the State of Utah.
