Equipment Mechanic

The City of Montebello is seeking an Equipment Mechanic. The salary range is $69,467.00 - $86,754.00 annually. This position is located in CA 90640, CA and is full time.

The position involves performing a variety of difficult inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of bus, automotive, public works, and emergency equipment. This is the full working level in the Equipment Mechanic class series. Incumbents' job assignments are concentrated in the performance of the most difficult and complex duties involving buses and heavy equipment. In addition, incumbents are required to be fully proficient in the performance of all types of equipment maintenance work.

Examples of duties include inspecting, locating, and diagnosing mechanical defects on City buses and automobiles, trucks, emergency equipment, construction equipment, and other power-driven equipment; determining the extent of necessary repairs; overhauling, repairing, and adjusting engines, transmissions, differentials, and clutches; tuning up engines, replacing ignition parts and cleaning and adjusting carburetors and fuel injection systems; replacing or repairing faulty parts, including wheel bearings, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and other parts and equipment; repairing and replacing components including generators, distributors, relays, lights, and switches; performing front-end alignments and repairs; repairing and adjusting gasoline generators, water pumps, and air compressors; performing welding work to adapt and fabricate parts and equipment; interchanging gas and diesel engines; performing specialized maintenance and repairs on diesel equipment and hydraulic systems; carrying out preventive maintenance programs; making field and emergency repairs as necessary; maintaining records on time and materials used; road testing repaired equipment; installing emergency warning equipment.

Requirements include possession of an appropriate California driver's license. Candidates must obtain their California Class B permit within 2 weeks of employment and obtain their California Class B license within 6 months of employment. Passing probation is contingent upon obtaining a Class B license. The work environment will be a combination of both indoors and outdoors. Training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be two years of progressively responsible and varied journey-level work experience performing skilled maintenance and repair work on buses, automotive, and other power-driven equipment, including extensive experience on diesel engines and hydraulic systems.

Knowledge of methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in maintaining automotive and heavy-duty diesel engine vehicles; principles and methods of gas and electrical welding; operation and care of internal combustion and diesel engines and components; principles and methods of preventive maintenance; and safe work practices is required. Ability to perform repairs and replacements on CNG engines, ensuring optimal functionality; execute routine maintenance tasks to prevent breakdowns and optimize CNG engine performance; diagnose mechanical defects and determine corrective procedures; perform specialized repair work on CNG engines and hydraulic systems; perform advanced troubleshooting and repair tasks on CNG engines, including overhauling and rebuilding components to required specifications; skillfully use a variety of hand and power tools in equipment inspection, testing, and repair work; estimate time and materials needed for repair work; perform electrical and gas welding; understand and carry out oral and written directions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships is required.
