Position Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Building Maintenance Technician to ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of all building systems and equipment within our facility. This role includes performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting issues, and conducting minor construction tasks to maintain infrastructure in optimal condition. The ideal candidate will possess mechanical aptitude, knowledge of electrical, plumbing, HVAC systems, and a strong commitment to workplace safety and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct routine inspections and troubleshoot building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, lighting, and mechanical equipment.
Respond promptly to maintenance requests and work orders.
Assist in the coordination, installation, modification, and repair of facility infrastructure and equipment.
Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and inventory of parts.
Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies during maintenance activities.
Work with external contractors and vendors for specialized repairs or services.
Support emergency maintenance and facility shutdowns as needed.
Keep maintenance tools, equipment, and work areas organized and clean.
Assist in training junior maintenance staff or new hires when applicable.
Engage in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance facility operations and maintenance processes.
Basic carpentry and painting skills.
Knowledge of safety standards, including OSHA regulations.
Assembly of furniture and equipment as required.
Support the Garden of Eatin by assisting with pruning, tree trimming, and general gardening tasks, including irrigation.
Ensure the cleaning and maintenance of outdoor play equipment.
This position plays a central role in the maintenance team at NBCC. The Building Maintenance Technician will have strong organizational and communication skills and will collaborate effectively with colleagues in various departments as well as external stakeholders.
Education, Experience & Essential Duties:
High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or vocational training in facility maintenance, electrical work, HVAC, or related fields is preferred.
Proven experience (typically 2+ years) in facility maintenance or a similar role.
Strong knowledge of electrical systems, plumbing, HVAC, and general building maintenance.
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
Proficient in using hand and power tools, diagnostic equipment, and maintenance software.
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Good communication skills for interacting with staff, vendors, and management.
Physical ability to perform manual labor, including lifting, climbing, and working in confined spaces.
Willingness to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings or weekends, if required.
A solutions-first approach with a creative mindset toward accomplishing goals.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business documents and agreements.
Strong written and verbal communication skills effective across all organizational levels. Bi-lingual is a plus.
Demonstrated time management skills, with the ability to prioritize workload effectively.
Must possess a valid California Driver's License, auto insurance, and reliable transportation.
Must pass a criminal background check.
Physical requirements include performing desk and computer-based tasks alongside maintenance duties, including frequent sitting and standing, lifting and moving objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
Occasional to rare bending, stooping, squatting, and knee work; crawling is not required.
Proactively identify and communicate issues related to building maintenance.
Attend regular team meetings and collaborate with others in the NBCC organization as necessary.
Maintain strict confidentiality with all NBCC information.
Perform additional assignments as requested.
Must have reliable transportation.
Physical Requirements
Consistent bending and lifting of up to 100 pounds.
Use of tools, including wheelbarrows and landscaping equipment.
Frequent standing, walking, reaching above shoulders, and fine manipulation skills.
Occasional twisting, bending, stooping, squatting, and kneeling; crawling is not required.
