Overview

Staff Engineer — ALPA, Tysons (McLean), Virginia. The Staff Engineer provides project coordination, subject matter expertise, and analysis in support of aviation safety initiatives related to flight deck technologies and avionics of transport category aircraft, Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), and/or Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) into the National Airspace System (NAS). External Description: ALPA seeks an experienced Staff Engineer for our Tysons office. This position involves coordinating with government agencies and the broader aviation industry, developing written communications for members and external stakeholders, and representing the Association to government agencies and industry groups. Responsibilities

Coordinate with ALPA leadership, committees, and staff to support aviation safety programs and initiatives in flight deck avionics, radio spectrum, and interoperability standards (RTCA, ASTM, etc.). Act as a liaison between ALPA and government agencies (FAA, Transport Canada, TSA, NAV CANADA) and industry stakeholders; assist in organizing meetings and communicating findings. Develop written communications to members, governments, and industry groups on aviation safety and security topics. Support ALPA Air Safety Organization (ASO) pilot representatives on internal and external committees. Travel 10–20% as needed. Participate in meetings with industry and government stakeholders on assigned topics. Minimum Requirements / Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace / Aeronautical Engineering; coursework or training in Avionics design and flight deck design preferred, or equivalent education/experience. Minimum three (3) years related aviation industry experience; five (5) or more years strongly preferred, related to flight operations integration for transport category aircraft, UAS, and/or AAM into the NAS. Understanding of aviation safety concepts related to flight deck and avionics standards development; experience with certification and standards is highly desired. Experience with U.S. and Canadian aviation regulations (FARs and CARs), avionics/flight deck technologies, and knowledge of ICAO or international safety data systems. Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; ability to interact with staff, pilot members, and external contacts; ability to prepare technical writing and presentations for various audiences. Ability to work independently, be proactive, and adapt to changing demands; capable of learning quickly. On a rotational basis, respond to the ALPA Worldwide Accident Hotline and Pilot Peer Support line, including outside business hours. Software proficiency: Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel.
