Mechanical Engineer V / Optical Engineer — Redmond, WA (Contract: 12+ Months) Compensation: This position offers an hourly rate range from $80 - $85 per hour. A Optical Engineer V role is available to design camera/optical systems and work with critical optical technologies such as lens specification, aberrations, calibration, color balance, aperture, exposure, gain, motion-induced blur, and lighting. The data collection systems developed will support machine learning/machine vision applications and robotic manipulation, installed across facilities to capture the data needed to automate processes. Responsibilities Conceive, develop, prototype and deploy data-collection systems at scale to support machine learning/machine vision workflows. Design camera/optical systems and apply knowledge of optical technologies (lens specs, aberrations, calibration, color balance, aperture, exposure, gain, motion blur, lighting). Explore active and passive sensing modalities (e.g., structured light, stereo, lidar, radar, infrared, RFID) and apply them where appropriate. Engage with customers across a range of roles (executives to developers and warehouse staff) to understand requirements and deliver solutions in a fast-paced environment. Collaborate with machine learning scientists, fulfillment and labeling teams, field engineering, maintenance personnel, and customers worldwide. Qualifications BS degree in electrical engineering, optics or vision systems 5 years of hardware development experience, including digital optical / machine vision systems for industrial applications Strong interest and ability to learn customer requirements in the data collection space Excellent oral and written communication skills Ability to develop data collection software (sensor interface) for experimental/prototyping purposes Ability to design, acquire and prototype sensing systems Preferred Qualifications MS or PhD in electrical engineering, optics or vision systems Experience with multi-sensor systems and non-optical sensing systems Familiarity with computer vision / machine learning Location: Redmond, WA Start Date: Right Away Seniority level and employment type: Mid-Senior level, Contract Industry notes: Belcan is a provider of staffing and engineering services, serving clients globally.
