This position provides leadership for staff human resources operations within the Division of Allergy & Infectious Diseases. The role manages recruitment and onboarding, compensation management, employee relations, leaves and accommodations, staff development, and other HR processes to support a large and complex organization with 148+ faculty, 22+ fellows, and 166+ staff across multiple sites.

Position Purpose The purpose of this position is to independently manage and oversee all aspects of staff HR operations for the Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, exercising discretion and independent judgment in recruitment, employee relations, compensation, and staff development. The role requires the ability to coordinate high volumes of operational activities, interpret policies, and apply expert judgment to ensure compliance with UW regulations.

The successful candidate will demonstrate organization, problem‑solving, and communication skills with frequent interaction inside and outside the Division and will handle confidential matters with tact and discretion while delivering excellent customer service.

Duties & Responsibilities

Recruitment & Onboarding (25%)

Oversee and manage all aspects of the recruitment process for the Division (temporary and regular professional and classified staff; graduate students and student assistants).

Partner with hiring managers to understand objectives, assess hiring needs, create recruitment strategies, and manage searches through the recruitment lifecycle.

Guide job description development, recruitment requests, and related processes; consult with faculty on program management needs and supervisory reporting structures.

Understand and apply complexities of staff, undergraduate, and graduate student staffing.

Provide expertise on standard hiring processes (interviews, candidate reviews, reference checks, and UW compliance).

Manage onboarding, offboarding and related Workday actions; advise on access to UW data systems and conduct exit interviews.

Educate managers on current policy information for onboarding and offboarding.

Compensation Management (25%)

Review and recommend compensation settings for new hires and changes; consult with division leadership as needed.

Analyze salary levels and equity within the Division, Department, School of Medicine and the University.

Review and advise on job descriptions to reflect current work and oversee position reviews.

Consult and educate managers on compensation actions, processes, requirements, and justifications.

Oversee Workday compensation actions (e.g., TPI/TSI, one-time payments, in-grades).

Review and process FTE requests.

Employee Relations (20%)

Coach managers on performance and corrective actions; provide guidance on presenting difficult information to employees.

Oversee layoffs and/or furloughs for Campus HR review as needed.

Serve as Division HR liaison with UW HR, DOM HR, and related offices; maintain relationships with Campus HR Operations and other units (e.g., University Attorney General's Office, Disability Services, UCIRO).

Act as Division point-of-contact for HR grievances, investigations, fact-finding and conflicts; mediate, escalate as needed, and guide resolution.

Provide policy interpretations and recommendations on complaint handling and corrective actions; counsel managers on compliance with university guidelines.

Leaves & Accommodations (15%)

Manage leave and accommodation matters; coordinate with Central HR Leave Specialists and Department of Medicine on complex leaves.

Counsel staff on use of paid leave and extended FMLA leaves, including parental leave.

Understand and educate on leaves policies (FMLA, paid leave) and coordinate with payroll for reporting and communications.

Ensure ADA compliance and coordinate reasonable accommodation requests; advise employees and supervisors on procedures.

Staff Development, Special Projects & Other (15%)

Direct and manage staff performance evaluation processes; ensure UW HR and Departmental compliance.

Guide managers on performance evaluation best practices; facilitate employee development opportunities.

Develop and maintain division policies and procedures related to recruitment, onboarding, offboarding, and related HR processes.

Ensure division activities comply with Department, School and University policies and state/federal laws. Maintain compliance with FLSA, ADA and Washington state law.

Plan and complete special projects and participate in professional activities to stay current with HR trends (CUPA-HR, SHRM).

Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Administrative Management or related field and a minimum of 3 years of progressive HR experience in a diverse, complex organization.

Equivalent education/experience may substitute for all minimum qualifications except where a license/certification/registration is legally required.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and willingness to learn UW proprietary software.

Desired Qualifications

Certification as PHR or SHRM-CP is desirable.

Working Conditions

Hybrid position: 3 in-office days and 2 remote days.

Ability to manage heavy workload and deadlines in collaboration with managers, staff and faculty.

Compensation, Benefits and Position Details Pay Range Minimum: $72,000.00 annual

Pay Range Maximum: $92,400.00 annual
