The Assurance Manager is responsible for supervising, directing, and reviewing the results through the delegation of tasks throughout the planning, field work and wrap-up stages of an audit client engagement. This role includes marketing, networking, and business development within an area of expertise, as well as ensuring engagement profitability involving billings and collections. Responsibilities include advising the client on economic and regulatory risks within their industry, resolving complex accounting issues, applying GAAP and GAAS consistently, writing technical consultation memos on GAAP/GAAS issues, and documenting, validating, testing, and assessing financial reporting control systems. Job Duties Control Environment: Applies knowledge to establish or enhance effectiveness or mitigate risks of policies and procedures; understands objectives and components of the control environment and supervisory controls; validates and assesses the effectiveness of internal controls over financial reporting; identifies and communicates improvements to management and audit committee. Identify and delegate audit functions to the auditor in charge; supervise the audit team and review workpapers and conclusions onsite during field work; provide on-the-job training to engagement staff. GAAP: Applies principles to client transactions; communicates understanding and application; identifies impact of new accounting pronouncements; monitors professional pronouncements; presents and discusses alternative GAAP/GAAS approaches; drafts complex financial statements and footnotes; documents and resolves complex accounting issues with input from technical experts as needed. SEC and PCAOB: Applies SEC regulations and PCAOB guidelines; reviews filings for form, content, completeness, and accuracy; ensures quarterly reviews are performed; ensures required communications to client and Audit Committee are complete and compliant; ensures Section 404 internal control audit work is complete and compliant; maintains engagement independence requirements. GAAS: Applies professional standards and practices; documents and communicates understanding; provides guidance and affirms conclusions; uses efficiency tools (e.g., sampling, CAATS) as appropriate. Methodology: Applies BDO standards for delivery of quality services; conducts detailed reviews to ensure audits conform to assurance manual standards; prepares communications to management and audit committees; initiates client acceptance/retention procedures; plans audits and oversees procedure execution with quality and efficiency; follows proper archiving procedures; considers Sarbanes-Oxley rules for combined 404 and financial statement audits for public clients. Research: Applies methodology to research issues using authoritative sources; defines research projects; uses appropriate tools and communicates conclusions; prepares memos and consults as appropriate; presents issues to RTD or concurring reviewer. Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises Associates and Senior Associates; reviews their work; acts as a Career Advisor; schedules workload; provides feedback; coaches staff for on-the-job learning. Education and Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required (Accounting/Finance/Economics/Statistics preferred); Master’s in Accountancy preferred; five or more years of relevant audit experience; prior supervisory experience; industry expertise in at least one assurance specialty preferred; active licensed US CPA or international equivalent required; if imported license, must obtain US CPA within defined timeframe. Software and Tools: Proficient in Microsoft Office; experience with assurance applications and research tools preferred. Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Strong GAAP/GAAS knowledge; familiarity with SEC and PCAOB reporting; excellent verbal and written communication; strong people development and delegation skills; client development/relationship-building; sound decision-making; ability to resolve complex accounting issues; responsibility for business development, marketing, and engagement profitability including billings and collections. Individual salaries are determined based on qualifications, experience, skills, and geography. Location-specific ranges include: California $120,000-$140,000; Colorado $95,000-$120,000; Illinois $100,000-$120,000; Maryland $105,000-$125,000; Massachusetts $105,000-$115,000; Minnesota $92,000-$106,000; New Jersey $104,000-$112,000; NYC/Long Island/Westchester $110,000-$150,000; Washington $95,000-$115,000.
