Evanston, Illinois The Store Manager is the key leader and ambassador of our Evanston Shop for Good store, which first opened in 2020 and relocated to its new Central Street location in November 2024. This position maximizes revenue and volunteer engagement for YWCA Shop for Good, one of two volunteer-driven women’s resale boutiques—alongside our Wilmette location—that fund the domestic violence, economic advancement, equity, and aquatics programs of YWCA Evanston/North Shore. Reporting directly to the Shop for Good Retail Area Manager, the Store Manager oversees a part-time Assistant Store Manager and approximately 15 volunteers, and collaborates with diverse stakeholders to create a welcoming, respectful, and customer-focused environment that amplifies the YWCA’s mission. Overview / Description This is a mission-driven social enterprise. The role inspires and engages customers, donors, volunteers, and community partners through a profitable and purpose-driven retail experience. Success requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, flexibility, teamwork, and a keen sense of fashion and current trends. The Store Manager is responsible for developing and implementing retail strategies that align with department goals, managing daily store operations, and providing input on department priorities and procedures, while maintaining a safe, trauma-informed, and inclusive environment in line with YWCA’s mission to eliminate racism and empower women. Essential Functions And Responsibilities Sales and Inventory Management (30%) Ensure each customer and donor has a positive experience by fostering exceptional customer service and understanding customer and donor preferences. Maintain a transparent, volunteer-driven inventory management process, including donation acceptance, inventory selection, sorting, and pricing to maximize store revenue. Assist in setting ongoing revenue goals, track progress, and report on sales goals. Develop and implement sales strategies that maximize revenue and ensure timely turnover of inventory within the season. Maintain an exceptional shopping environment aligned with YWCA brand guidelines, offering a boutique shopping experience in a clean, organized, and well-merchandised space. Implement loss prevention strategies and manage disposal of unwanted items via the selected vendor. Coordinate with the Area Retail Manager to secure large donations of high-end goods and arrange timely pickups. Collaborate with Area Retail Manager and Shop for Good Wilmette staff on weekly sales and content with support from Marketing and Communications. Partner with Shop for Good staff and volunteers to develop and post engaging social media content on the store’s Instagram account. Operations and Supervision (30%) Maintain store protocols, cleanliness, opening/closing procedures, banking, financial reporting, and other critical operations. Coordinate communications with the Area Retail Manager, Operations Director, and property owner to address maintenance issues. Develop, motivate, and maintain a high-performing team with strong service standards. Hire a diverse staff according to agency policies; complete hiring paperwork timely. Onboard new hires per policies (including work plans for 20+ hours/week) and train on operations, policies, and responsibilities. Oversee workflow and productivity, manage schedules, approve timesheets, and set professional goals. Provide ongoing supervision, coaching, feedback, and performance reviews; manage staff morale and development. Ensure staff understand and adhere to Employee Handbook policies; stay current with agency technology and training. Serve as primary liaison between leadership and staff to ensure timely, thorough communication and advocate for staff needs. Volunteer and Donor Management (25%) Collaborate to recruit, train, and manage a diverse volunteer workforce aligned with agency policies. Organize volunteer support to increase community awareness, donations, and spotlight local designers/artists. Update volunteer handbook and coordinate volunteer trainings; manage weekly volunteer schedules for up to 30 volunteers. Foster a working environment that recognizes volunteer contributions and encourages commitment to YWCA. Collaborate with Development and Marketing to support donor retention, donations, and acknowledgments for recurring donors. Coordinate with Development for corporate volunteer opportunities and cultivation strategies to convert donors/volunteers to financial contributors. Support collaboration with program directors to create shopping opportunities (e.g., prepaid vouchers, on-site training) for program participants. Community Outreach (15%) Plan and implement marketing and outreach efforts with Marketing, Communications, and Development to expand awareness, donations, and revenue, including events and partnerships. Represent YWCA Evanston/North Shore with local organizations to expand awareness across North Shore communities. Additional Duties Attend trainings, quarterly meetings, and agency committees as available. Pursue professional development. Adhere to all YWCA procedures, policies, and Employee Handbook; perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications and Requirements MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education: High school degree or equivalent required. Experience and/or Training: At least 4 years in a women’s retail environment with increasing responsibility for sales, inventory management, merchandising, and supervision. Deep knowledge of women’s clothing brands. Customer-service-driven experience. Experience with mission-related activities demonstrates community service commitment. Experience working with volunteers. Technology/Equipment: Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Intermediate proficiency in point-of-sale systems (ResaleWorld/Liberty or similar preferred). PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Experience and/or Training: 8+ years in women’s retail with increasing responsibility. Experience training/supervising in retail. Experience engaging clothing donors; marketing/outreach planning. Technology/Equipment: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Advanced proficiency in point-of-sale systems (ResaleWorld/Liberty or similar preferred). PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS Frequent and occasional requirements as described; see below for specifics: Frequent nights/weekends for events or meetings; occasional local travel.
