Job Description
Zendesk is building a next-generation IT Asset Management (ITAM) solution, and we’re looking for a Backend Software Engineer to help power the core Tasks and Approvals capabilities within this platform. This role sits within the broader ITAM team and will collaborate closely with the platform-wide Tasks and Approvals systems—two critical features for managing lifecycle workflows, compliance, and automation in enterprise IT environments. If you’re excited to build scalable backend services that drive consistent, reusable task and approval logic for IT asset lifecycle events, procurement flows, and governance models, this is the role for you. Location Requirement: This is a hybrid role. Candidates must reside within a commutable distance of one of our offices in San Francisco, CA; Austin, TX; or Madison, WI
Responsibilities
Design and implement backend systems that bring robust, reusable task and approval functionality to ITAM workflows. Build features that support lifecycle automation, governance enforcement, and audit-ready IT workflows across Zendesk’s ITAM platform. Collaborate with other ITAM engineers and the global Tasks & Approvals platform teams to extend core features for use in the ITAM domain. Ensure integrations between asset data, approval logic, and task progression are performant, reliable, and auditable. Support internal adoption of platform-wide components for the ITAM-specific needs. Build APIs and services that ensure extensibility, scalability, and security. Write clean, testable, maintainable code, and contribute to code reviews. Participate in agile ceremonies and team planning processes.
What You Bring to the Role
3 years of frontend software development experience. Solid experience with JavaScript/TypeScript and React Familiarity with Ruby on Rails or similar backend frameworks. Ability to work cross-functional and translate product needs into technical implementation. Strong communication and collaboration skills. Knowledge of RDBMS systems like MySQL or Aurora.
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with IT asset management, IT service management (ITSM), or enterprise workflow automation. Experience integrating platform components into domain-specific product teams. Experience with observability tools like DataDog. Experience designing RESTful APIs and integrating with backend services. Familiarity with task lifecycle models, workflow orchestration, or approval logic systems.

The US annualized base salary range for this position is $110,000.00-$166,000.00. This position may also be eligible for bonus, benefits, or related incentives. While this range reflects the minimum and maximum value for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations, the offer for the successful candidate for this position will be based on job related capabilities, applicable experience, and other factors such as work location. Please note that the compensation details listed in US role postings reflect the base salary only (or OTE for commissions based roles), and do not include bonus, benefits, or related incentives.
Hybrid: In this role, our hybrid experience is designed at the team level to give you a rich onsite experience packed with connection, collaboration, learning, and celebration – while also giving you flexibility to work remotely for part of the week. This role must attend our local office for part of the week. The specific in-office schedule is to be determined by the hiring manager.
