Overview
Director of Design - Experiential Strategy & Design. The Director of Design is the senior creative leader overseeing the development and delivery of 3D brand environments, including trade show exhibits, experiential activations, and spatial retail design. This role blends visionary design leadership with hands-on creative execution and strategic deal team partnership. You’ll lead a growing design team while actively engaging with clients and internal stakeholders on strategy, presentations, and competitive pursuits. This is a “player-coach” position—ideal for someone who thrives on big-picture creative direction but still rolls up their sleeves to solve, sketch, and shape. This person must be fluent in both creative and business languages—able to pitch ideas that inspire, defend strategy under pressure, and deliver creative value in ways that win business and elevate client relationships.
Responsibilities
Translate brand narratives into 3D—craft immersive, memorable environments that drive engagement and business results
Lead and mentor a cross-functional design team, ensuring high standards of creative output and collaboration
Partner with accounts, PM, and production to bring projects from concept to execution—on time and within scope
Own creative direction in client presentations, new business pursuits, and key project milestones
Ensure quality control across visual storytelling, brand alignment, technical execution, and fabrication
Stay ahead of industry trends, client behaviors, and material innovation to keep work relevant and inspiring
Contribute to competitive pitches, strategic client planning, and mid-market to enterprise RFPs
Qualifications
7+ years of experience in experiential, exhibit, or spatial design, with 3+ years in a creative leadership role
Proven track record leading design teams within agencies, exhibit shops, or brand activation firms
Experience contributing to or leading competitive business development efforts (RFPs, pitches, strategy)
High comfort level with client-facing roles, including C-suite level presentations and creative defense
Strong 3D design software skills (SketchUp, Vectorworks, or similar) plus CAD / rendering proficiency
Deep understanding of materiality, fabrication, and real-world installation challenges
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, values-driven agency with high creative standards and a social impact mindset
Preferred (But Not Required)
Background in industrial design, architecture, or experiential marketing
Knowledge of trade show venue logistics, show services, and union environments
Familiarity with sustainable design practices and emerging display tech
