Overview
Director of Scientific Core Facilities role at Houston Methodist Academic Institute. Responsible for administrative and scientific management of a Core Facility/Laboratory under regulatory oversight (e.g., FDA, CLIA) or with a complex structure (e.g., Biorepository). Operates the lab(s) to support research and academic endeavors by planning, allocating resources, staffing, ordering and maintaining equipment, and upholding safety protocols. Responsibilities
Directs, develops and implements strategic and operational projects and processes, either autonomously or via teams, to achieve objectives. Oversees staff development to meet quality, service and cost goals; manages hiring, scheduling, supervision, retention, and performance evaluations. Ensure employee engagement and appropriate staffing levels; manage budget development and compliance; coach and counsel employees; develop and implement policies to ensure a safe and effective work environment. Ensure training, monitoring and operations initiatives comply with ethical, legal, and regulatory standards. Lead and facilitate inter-department collaboration to achieve business goals and promote teamwork across areas. Provide scientific and administrative guidance to HMRI Principal Investigators on core-area expertise; collaborate with Communications to develop marketing materials and events. Service Essential Functions
Oversee department operations and projects to ensure timely delivery and high customer/patient satisfaction; set priorities and standards for staff. Drive service standards and participate on committees to advocate for the department. Provide day-to-day management of complex, state-of-the-art or regulated Core; prepare Core for inspections by internal and external regulatory bodies (FDA, CAP, CLIA) and ensure safety compliance. For new cores, oversee creation, development and implementation of Core facilities. Quality/Safety Essential Functions
Maintain a safe working environment; monitor and update safety plans; ensure staff maintain credentials and competencies per accrediting/licensing requirements. Proactively optimize workflows, implement process improvements (e.g., lean principles), and model safety awareness. Ensure policy and procedure compliance; address non-compliance as needed; ensure regulatory compliance across the Core. Develop compliance reports and strategic operational/scientific planning for the Core. Finance Essential Functions
Develop and manage department budgets and capital plans; plan for equipment and project funding; align staffing with cost-effectiveness goals. Create strategies to meet financial targets and staffing needs; optimize productivity and resource utilization. Establish schedules for services/charges in coordination with relevant offices and in compliance with regulations. Growth/Innovation Essential Functions
Identify and implement innovative solutions to improve operations; lead unit projects and task forces; represent HMRI/Leadership in external meetings as appropriate. Lead change initiatives and collaborate with stakeholders; support staff development plans (IDP). Develop Core Strategic Plan, including scientific direction and budget planning; participate in institute-level committees as applicable. Provide scientific input on technology/equipment options and capital purchases in alignment with strategic plans. This job description is not all-inclusive; duties may be added as needed. Terminal degree in one of the natural sciences required. Work Experience
Seven years of experience in administration/management. Five years of experience managing a technical/research resource. Licenses and Certifications - Required
