Overview
Job Description: Executive Director, American Council of Engineering Companies of Hawaii (ACEC Hawaii) Job Title: Executive Director Classification: Exempt Reports to: ACEC Hawaii Board of Directors Personnel Supervision: Some personnel supervision required The American Council of Engineering Companies of Hawaii (ACEC Hawaii) is a professional association representing the business interests of engineering firms across the state. ACEC Hawaii is committed to being the leading voice shaping an innovative, equitable, and resilient engineering industry by 2030. The organization focuses on advocacy, education, communication, and business services to support its member firms. The Executive Director (ED) is the chief executive officer of ACEC Hawaii and is responsible for supporting and driving the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors. Along with the ACEC Hawaii president, the ED serves as the public face of the organization and is expected to represent ACEC Hawaii professionally with members, government agencies, industry partners, and the broader community.
Responsibilities
Organizational Leadership
Support and drive the strategic plan and annual goals in collaboration with the Board.
Support the Board and Executive Committee by preparing agendas, reports, and recommendations.
Attend committee meetings (as needed) and reduce the administrative burden on board members.
Advocacy and Government Relations
Serve as the primary advocate for ACEC Hawaii at the state and local levels in conjunction with the legislative committee and president.
Monitor, respond, coordinate and lead efforts to solicit input from board members and member firms on legislative and regulatory issues affecting the engineering industry.
Coordinate with lobbyists and advocacy partners.
Represent ACEC Hawaii at political functions and public hearings.
Register as a lobbyist if required by law.
Member Engagement and Services
Support the delivery of programs, training, and resources for member firms.
Foster member retention and recruitment.
Explore opportunities and develop plan for non-dues revenue, including sponsorships and partnerships.
Communication and Public Relations
Support the development and implementation of a communications strategy to engage members, partners, and the public.
Oversee and liaise with marketing firm for newsletters, social media, website content, and public messaging.
Serve as the spokesperson for ACEC Hawaii and promote the value of engineering in the community.
Operations and Financial Management
Oversee day-to-day operations, including budgeting, financial reporting, and compliance.
Manage contractors as needed.
Ensure efficient use of resources and maintain organizational sustainability.
National and Regional Engagement
Represent ACEC Hawaii at ACEC National meetings and regional events.
Participate in the National Association of Engineering Council Executives (NAECE).
Collaborate with other ACEC chapters on shared initiatives.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, public administration, business, or a related field (advanced degree preferred).
Minimum of 7–10 years of leadership experience in a nonprofit, association, government, or engineering-related organization.
Experience in legislative advocacy or public policy is highly desirable.
Familiarity with Hawaii’s engineering community and local issues is a strong plus.

Strategic thinker with the ability to manage complex initiatives.
Ability to work with diverse stakeholders, including engineers, policymakers, and community leaders.

Working Conditions This is an independent contractor based in Hawaii. Occasional travel within Hawaii and to national ACEC events is expected. Evening and weekend availability may be required for meetings and events.
