About the team Roku, Inc. is seeking an experienced attorney with a strong understanding of data privacy and consumer protection laws to join its legal team. This role provides legal guidance on novel issues arising in the TV streaming industry and supports Roku’s products and services from design and development through launch and implementation. About the role The successful candidate should have a strong working knowledge of global privacy and data security laws, experience supporting product launches, and the ability to translate legal requirements into actionable guidance for Product, User Experience and Engineering teams. A general understanding of online media, digital advertising technology, Internet technology and cloud computing is helpful, along with prior experience implementing privacy-by-design principles. You should demonstrate keen analytical abilities, good judgment, pragmatic problem solving, adaptability in a changing environment, and the ability to make smart decisions with ambiguity. The role requires an entrepreneurial mindset and the ability to work independently. This is an opportunity to contribute to Roku’s rapid growth. What you will be doing Work closely with Product and Engineering teams to develop Roku’s consumer electronics and streaming platform, proactively managing legal risk while advancing business goals and protecting users worldwide. Advise on privacy and data security terms for content and digital product distribution agreements. Provide guidance on consumer protection, privacy, and data protection laws to ensure compliance with U.S. and international requirements and industry best practices through privacy-by-design principles. Review user flows, product feature guides, advertising collateral, promotions, and other communications for compliance with data protection, consumer protection, and advertising laws and standards. Collaborate cross-functionally with business units including end user experience, devices, mobile, web, ad product, programming, content and services, engineering, marketing, and customer support. Help develop scalable processes for legal review of new product launches. Keep up to date on developments in laws and industry trends applicable to media, ad tech, Big Data, OTT, IoT and smart devices, including federal and state privacy laws and consumer protection guidance. Work with the legal team to address the company’s data collection, storage, use, and transfer practices. Support Roku’s privacy compliance efforts as needed. We’re excited if you have At least 5 years of experience as a practicing attorney. Significant in-house experience advising on data privacy, data protection, and the regulatory aspects of product development in technology (consumer-facing, Internet company preferred). Strong working knowledge of global privacy and data security laws; familiarity with other consumer laws is a plus. Familiarity with content and digital product distribution agreements, including MVPD, DMVPD, and development agreements (e.g., Apple, Google). A passion for technology and the ability to understand complex technology and product use cases quickly. Bachelor’s degree and Juris Doctorate from a U.S. accredited law school.
