General Statement of Duties: Operates dump trucks and does semi-skilled hand work to perform tasks related to the installation, maintenance and repair of the street and alley system; does related work as required; must be reasonably available for off hour call-ins. Distinguishing Features of the Position: The work in this position requires considerable skill in operating large dump trucks with constant attention to safety of operation in order to prevent accidents. Errors in judgement may result in damage to expensive equipment. Assignments are outlined both orally and in writing by the Public Works Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent. Standard procedures are followed and work is inspected periodically for safety and economy in operation. Supervision may be exercised over lower classified employees. Work is checked through inspection by superiors. Examples of Work (Illustrative Only): As a major assignment, operate a dump truck to haul and/or spread materials such as slag, sand, salt, patching materials and debris; Plow snow from streets; Service, clean and make minor repairs to equipment; Operate leaf loader; Inspect equipment to insure that it is in safe and proper working condition; Install and repair catch basins, gutters, culverts, grates, storm sewers and other drainage structures; Place and finish concrete; Construct forms; Set guard rail posts; Serve as lead man over lower classified employees; Work in all types of weather; When not driving a truck, work as a laborer. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Good knowledge of traffic and safety rules and accident prevention practices; skill in the operation of a dump truck under all types of weather conditions; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; dependability; good physical condition; must possess a valid motor vehicle license. Acceptable Experience and Training: Some experience in the operation of dump trucks and possession of a high school diploma; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Additional Requirements: Must have or obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License with no air brake restriction required by state of residency in order to operate the fleet of trucks in the City. As per the Agreement between The City of Marietta and Teamsters Local Union No. 637, the employee must have or obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License with no air brake restriction within 180 days of the appointment to this position as specified in the Commercial Driver's License Requirements, Sections A Thru F. Class B CDL
