Perform duties inclusive of an LT (Laboratory Technician). Perform high complexity testing without direct supervision. Process incoming samples by ensuring correct labeling, computer log-in, centrifugation, aliquoting, and storage. Perform and record routine instrument maintenance procedures. Analyze and record quality control materials with documentation of action on out-of-range values. Accurately analyze patient specimens using instruments and/or by specified manual methodologies within specified turnaround times. Recognize critical, abnormal and unacceptable test results and follow-up according to established protocols. Identify problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results and take action as outlined in predetermined protocols. Monitor instrument error codes, troubleshoot and correct problems as necessary. Accurately transcribe patient data into computer record including any pertinent sample description comments. Perform analysis on unique specimens and create preliminary and draft reports. Maintain a safe work area in a well-stocked, clean condition. Cytogenomic Duties and Responsibilities

Demonstrate appropriate use and knowledge of Cytogenetic imaging and analysis software. Identify and understand the clinical significance of chromosome, FISH or microarray abnormalities. Demonstrate knowledge and use of the most current ISCN nomenclature. Analyze patient samples (automated or manual) and report test results consistent with accuracy, quality assurance and TAT goals of the laboratory. Required Qualifications

Baccalaureate degree in Medical Laboratory Science, equivalent laboratory science, or in a chemical, physical or biological science. Minimum six months professional experience in a Cytogenomics laboratory. Desired Qualifications

Certification as a Cytogenetic Technologist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist or eligibility for certification at the time of hire is desired. Must have the demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively with other medical personnel in both verbal and written form. Demonstrated ability to independently organize and prioritize work. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse team. This full time, 40 hour position is on the day shift, and will require rotating holidays, weekends and on-call. Works with infectious disease and/or hazardous materials. May have exposure to noise from laboratory equipment and pneumatic tube system. This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
