Environmental Specialist III

This is an independent professional position that functions with limited supervision and exercises independent judgment while performing activities under several environmental health programs and is under the direct supervision of the Environmental Manager. This position is responsible and accountable for providing oversight of water section programs, such as but not limited to pool inspections, limited use water inspections, well surveillance, healthy beaches, mobile home/recreational vehicle parks, sanitary nuisance complaints, rabies prevention, and other special assignments as needed. This position functions as a specialized and consultative professional position performing work independently within a participative management structure for a general environmental health program. Field work of highly technical nature is performed and accomplished independently with limited supervision by the immediate supervisor. While this is not a supervisory position, the incumbent provides technical assistance and guidance to EH staff in a peer review fashion. This position requires computer skills including but not limited to Microsoft Office, environmental health database (EHD & EHDMA), HMS, on-line request forms and documentation. Knowledge of basic scientific terminology and sampling procedures is required. Strong technical data review skills, public relation and leadership skills, ability to determine priorities, handle stressful situations, strong problem-solving skills, ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments, and ability to effectively communicate and maintain good working relationships with others are also required. Minimum qualifications include willingness to work after hours, certification as an environmental health professional, a valid Florida driver's license, and a bachelor's degree in natural, physical, environmental, or life science with at least 30 semester hours or 40 quarter hours in the sciences. Preferred qualifications include OSTDS and/or food hygiene certification and swimming pool certification.
