Diesel Mechanic

The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for performing maintenance and repairs on diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. This role involves diagnosing mechanical issues, conducting routine inspections, and ensuring that all vehicles meet safety and operational standards. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in diesel mechanics, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Vehicle Maintenance: Perform scheduled maintenance, inspections, and repairs on diesel-powered vehicles, including trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Diagnosis: Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical issues, using diagnostic tools and equipment to identify the root cause of problems.
  • Repairs: Conduct repairs on engines, transmissions, braking systems, electrical systems, and other vehicle components as needed.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Implement preventive maintenance programs to reduce downtime and extend the life of vehicles and equipment.
  • Safety Compliance: Ensure all repairs and maintenance work comply with safety regulations and company policies, maintaining accurate records of work performed.
  • Parts Management: Identify and order necessary parts for repairs, working closely with the parts department to ensure timely availability of components.
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed records of all maintenance and repair work, including parts used, labor hours, and any issues identified.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Fleet Maintenance Manager and other team members to prioritize work orders and ensure vehicles are ready for use.
  • Emergency Repairs: Respond to breakdowns or urgent repair needs, providing timely and effective solutions to get vehicles back in operation.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience as a diesel mechanic, preferably in a fleet or heavy equipment environment.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certification in diesel mechanics or a related field is preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, mechanical systems, and vehicle repair procedures.
    • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and repair equipment.
    • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
    • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
    • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work as part of a team.
    • Commitment to safety and quality in all work performed.
  • Licenses/Certifications: ASE certification or equivalent is preferred; a valid CDL is a plus.

Work Environment:

  • Ability to work in a garage or workshop environment, with exposure to loud noises, heavy machinery, and various weather conditions.
  • Physical ability to lift heavy objects, stand for extended periods, and perform physically demanding tasks.
