The Millwork Design Manager is responsible for leading the design and engineering in developing high-quality, accurate, and efficient shop drawings and design solutions for custom architectural millwork projects. This role bridges creative design, technical detailing, and production by ensuring drawings meet client specifications, design intent, building codes, and manufacturing capabilities. The Millwork Design Manager collaborates closely with project managers, estimators, clients, and the shop floor to deliver projects on time, within budget, and at the highest level of craftsmanship.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Design & Engineering Oversight
Review architectural drawings, specifications, and client design intent to develop millwork shop drawings. Ensure designs are manufacturable, cost-effective, and aligned with company standards. Oversee submittal process, RFIs, and coordination with architects, designers, and contractors. Project Coordination
Work with project managers to define scope, schedule, and deliverables for the design team. Communicate and collaborate with production and installation teams to resolve technical challenges. Participate in client meetings and design reviews when required. Quality & Compliance
Verify accuracy of drawings before release to production. Ensure all millwork designs comply with industry standards, building codes, and safety regulations. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of materials, finishes, hardware, and fabrication technologies. Innovation & Process Improvement
Introduce design automation tools, 3D modeling, and other technologies to improve efficiency. Continuously refine design workflows to enhance accuracy and reduce rework. Support research and development efforts in new millwork solutions and materials. Qualifications
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Industrial Design, Engineering, or related field (preferred) OR equivalent experience in architectural millwork. Experience in millwork or custom woodworking design, with at least 3 years in a leadership role. Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or other millwork drafting/CAD/CAM software. Strong knowledge of woodworking methods, materials, joinery, and hardware. Excellent communication and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Physical Demands / Work Environment
