Position: Truck Driver
Department: Street Department
Employment Status: Permanent - Full Time - Non-exempt
Schedule: Monday - Thursday or Tuesday - Friday 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM
Compensation: Grade 4 - Starting Rate is $19.34
Position Summary
Works under the supervision of the Streets & Right of Way Superintendent and the Deputy Engineering and Public Works Director and, at times, under the supervision of a Crew Leader. May supervise other employees for projects/tasks along with performing tasks required to maintain and repair asphalt and concrete surfaces, clean road ditches and sidewalks of debris, rights-of-way and clean roadways of snow and ice during winter months. May perform duties requiring some minimum skill in carpentry, masonry, pipe laying, and other learned traits; operates dump trucks and snowplows/spreaders requiring a CDL.
Essential Duties - Knowledge – Skills – Abilities
- Performs various manual labor tasks required to maintain and repair city streets (e.g., shoveling materials, loading/unloading trucks, operating handheld power tools and equipment).
- Operates dump trucks used for hauling bulk materials and various other trucks and attachments, including a bucket truck, as needed, and assigned by any assigned supervisor.
- Operates light equipment such as farm or lawn tractors, flusher truck, street sweeper, dump trucks (including with snowplow/aggregate spreader), three (3) ton roller (or larger), truck and trailer mounted generators, compressors, etc., rubber tire front end loaders, gas powered asphalt roller, chainsaw, forklift, manual rollers, tamper, shovel, pick, light-duty trucks, and other equipment smaller than three (3) tons.
- Cleans street ditches, culverts, sidewalks, right of way and curbs of leaves, garbage, trees, tree limbs, and other debris. Shoveling, using a leaf blower, rake, and broom.
- Erect and maintain the appropriate regulatory warning information and guide signs for the safe and efficient operation of the roadways.
- Works to treat city streets for snow and ice using both snow and ice removal equipment and hand-held tools.
- Helps prepare right-of-way and areas for special events.
- Participates in on-call rotations for emergency responses, storm, and snow events.
- Cleans equipment, vehicles, and tools used during the workday.
- Promotes an image of professional, courteous service as a representative of the City of Morgantown. Employee encounters occasional contact with other departments and general public.
- Maintains paperwork, as needed, and assigned by supervisors, describing materials, equipment, and personnel used during the day.
- Reports any equipment or vehicles concerns to the supervisor and mechanics.
- Performs duties as assigned by Public Works Director or Street Superintendent orally or in writing in a timely fashion.
- All training suggested and provided by the supervisor will be attended. A positive attitude and class environment shall be maintained whether in the classroom or on a jobsite.
- Wears all PPE required and follows all safety policies. May be required to keep records and work logs. Responsible for maintaining a safe work environment for yourself and others.
- May encounter “camps” and trash containing sharps/needles. Appropriate response will be required. Training will be provided.
- Employees will use computers and other equipment to receive/send communication, submit timesheets, request vacation, complete required training, and more.
- Knowledge of safe construction and work standards.
- Ability to read and understand construction plans and blueprints.
- Ability to understand and act on oral and written instructions. The ability to work without supervision.
- Other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Regular exposure to physically demanding, unpleasant, strenuous, and/or hazardous elements such as dealing with inclement weather and operating heavy equipment.
- Majority of work shift involves using equipment and performing tasks requiring repeated bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, or crawling.
- Occasional activities may require working from elevated spaces.
- Daily operations require unaided lifting of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Most of the work shift is outdoors or in a truck.
- Daily conditions include odors, fumes, dust, dirt, noise, and vibration; conditions vary with precipitation and seasonal changes.
Hazardous Conditions
- Constant hazards: danger from traffic, hot asphalt, mechanical hazards with heavy equipment, fall hazards, and entering confined spaces.
- Occasional hazards: tripping/slipping due to terrain and weather, traffic accidents during snow/ice work, earth or brick cave-ins when laying pipe or working in manholes.
- Possible hazards: contact with hazardous/toxic waste, sharps/needles, debris when delivering trash to the landfill, hazards around large vehicles on narrow roads and steep grades, and various weather conditions.
Use of Technology & Equipment
- Position uses, repairs, and/or troubleshoots specialized equipment such as HVAC, lighting, gas flares, blowers, engines, heavy equipment, diagnostic equipment, large vehicles (vacuums, street sweepers, fire apparatus) and/or public safety equipment.
- May operate excavators, snowplows, rollers, sweepers, tractors, and dump trucks.
Contact & Supervision
- Frequent internal and external contact, generally on routine matters such as furnishing or obtaining information.
- This position does not supervise any employees.
- Reports to Crew Leader, Streets & Right of Way Superintendent, and the Deputy Director of Engineering & Public Works.

Minimum Requirements
Education
- High school education or equivalent
Certification/License
- Requires valid Class B CDL driver’s license. Completion of obtaining valid Class A CDL with Tanker endorsement within 6 months of employment.
Experience
- Requires three years of general construction experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience operating light duty equipment such as payloaders, tractors, etc.
- Training in First Aid, CPR, and safe driving.
- Experience using common street equipment such as dump trucks, snowplows, rollers, graders, sweepers, flushers, tractors, bucket trucks, etc.
