Overview
Business Analyst role at PowerPlan, Inc.. A PowerPlan Professional Services Analyst works with a team of 2-8 people to configure and customize PowerPlan’s software to meet the accounting needs and business processes of utility customers. Analysts must understand the design documents for each software component they configure and contribute by writing SQL scripts, assisting in configuring interfaces, translating data, and testing the solution to ensure it meets client outcomes.
The primary objective for a 1st year Analyst is to learn PowerPlan’s functionality quickly and to become proficient with the basic tools and processes used to configure it. Project timelines range from 3 months to 2 years depending on scope. Analysts typically work on one project at a time until proficient enough to handle multiple projects. Analysts may travel to client sites up to 50% of the time.
Responsibilities
- Learn PowerPlan’s core product line through a four-week training program covering platform basics, functionality, data structures, tools (SQL, PowerBuilder, SourceTree, JIRA, etc.), and standard utility accounting concepts.
- Develop a complete understanding of each client project by reviewing the signed statement of work, researching client background and key contacts, and preparing for initial meetings.
- Assist in creating and configuring the build according to design documents agreed with the Solution Architect and client. Work with Testing Services to run appropriate testing scripts, identify root causes, resolve issues, and push updates for validation. Approximately 75% of time is spent configuring the build.
- Participate in project types including New Client Implementations, Upgrades, Expert Services, and Internal Initiatives, with responsibilities spanning data conversion, SQL scripting, feature enablement, and process improvement.
- Troubleshoot problems on assigned tasks and conduct unit testing to ensure configuration meets designed requirements.
- Track progress and provide regular status updates and timeline estimates to the Project Manager, identifying potential obstacles.
- Attend design meetings, observe client processes, and develop understanding of objectives, data needs, and configurations required.
- Develop the ability to self-source answers using internal tools and resources, while collaborating with peers when needed.
Qualifications and Abilities
- Willingness to learn PowerPlan functionality quickly and use basic tools for configuration
- Ability to write SQL scripts and work with PowerBuilder code objects; familiarity with related tools (e.g., SourceTree, JIRA) is a plus
- Understanding of basic accounting principles as they relate to utility operations and how PowerPlan automates these functions
- Effective communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills
- Capable of traveling up to 50% of the time to client sites
- Strong adaptability, fast learning, and self-motivation; able to develop soft skills and consulting acumen
