Overview As a Sr. Hardware Optical Electrical Engineer at Astera Labs, you will join our dedicated Hardware Engineering team working alongside ASIC Engineering. You will be responsible for designing boards incorporating Astera Labs’ diverse range of connectivity and memory products widely used by leading cloud service providers, server manufacturers, and network OEMs. You will be involved in every stage of design, from concept to mass production.
Responsibilities
Design boards incorporating connectivity and memory products for enterprise and data center environments.
Contribute across all design stages from concept through mass production, including schematic capture, board bring-up, debugging, optimization, and validation.
Collaborate with manufacturing, customer engagement, and post-production support teams; provide actionable feedback to internal groups to drive product and process improvements.
Interact with key customers to solicit input on form factors and propose comprehensive board products that meet their needs.
Work with contract manufacturers, PCB vendors, and other external suppliers to ensure manufacturability and quality.
Qualifications
Strong academic and technical background in electrical engineering. Bachelor’s in EE required; Master’s preferred.
Minimum 5 years of experience in system-level board design, from component selection and schematic capture through board bring-up, debug, optimization, and validation.
Solid background in high-speed board design techniques for enterprise/data center systems (e.g., PCIe add-in cards, servers, JBOGs/JBODs, networking switches/routers/interconnects, optics, active electrical cables).
Proficiency with schematic capture and PCB layout tools (Cadence, Altium) and working knowledge of Allegro for design reviews; understanding of power architecture (DC/DC POL converters and power integrity).
Knowledge of signal and power integrity challenges and solutions; experience with NRZ/PAM4 SerDes-based protocols (PCIe 3.0+, Ethernet 25G+) and/or memory interfaces (LPDDR4/5).
Experience in board bring-up and validation; silicon/PCB bring-up and debug; track record of taking products from concept to mass production.
Experience working with contract manufacturers, PCB vendors, and external suppliers.
Preferred: collaboration with mechanical/thermal teams, hardware design around FPGAs/MCUs, complete high-speed channel design including connectors and cables, and coordination with silicon characterization/validation teams.
Strong technical writing skills for hardware specs and user guides; experience in adjacent areas such as manufacturing, quality, and compliance.
Compensation The base salary range is $120,000 - $170,000. Final salary is determined by location, experience, and benchmarks for similar roles.
Equality and Inclusion We know that creativity and innovation happen more often when teams include diverse ideas, backgrounds, and experiences, and we actively encourage everyone with relevant experience to apply, including people of color, LGBTQ+ and non-binary people, veterans, parents, and individuals with disabilities.
Apply Interested candidates should submit a resume and supporting materials through the standard company application process.
