We focus on discovery and development of new medicines across modalities, delivering safe, scalable, sustainable, and reliable processes for synthetic assets including small molecules, peptides, and oligonucleotides. We are seeking a veteran and visionary Sr. Director of Early Phase Chemistry to join our leadership team. This individual will play a pivotal role in shaping the future direction of drug substance development at Lilly by providing leadership and guidance of the SMDD small molecule portfolio. The ideal candidate will drive early phase chemistry initiatives, build a world-class team, develop internal synthetic capabilities, and oversee external programs at CDMOs. Key Responsibilities
People & Team Management
Create a high-performance team culture with clear roles, responsibilities, and expectations for individuals and the team. Ensure safety of employees and facilities with robust safety programs and procedures. Recruit, develop and grow the next generation of leaders. Coach and mentor scientists across the organization. Foster collaboration and innovation within the early phase chemistry group and Lilly Research Labs.
Portfolio Delivery & Strategy
Deliver Early Phase material to meet toxicologic and clinical milestones. Develop a global network with CDMOs for starting materials and intermediates. Build and drive internal strategy for Small Molecules in the Medicine Foundry. Provide strategic guidance on synthetic, formulation, and manufacturing strategies; apply new technologies. Partner with cross-functional teams to integrate CMC development with discovery, toxicology, and clinical development. Accelerate discovery and development learnings through Lilly Research Labs partnership and pre-candidate material generation.
Technical Leadership
Integrate new technologies and partnerships to increase early phase capabilities. Drive route selection and scouting from Discovery to Ph II, internally and with CDMOs. Communicate complex technical strategies clearly. Manage internal and external resources to advance early phase drug development. Understand portfolio objectives and how programs and people deliver them.
SMDD Management Team Member
Provide strategic leadership of early phase chemistry and SMDD goals. Communicate SMDD strategy and drive improvements to business processes.
Basic Qualifications
Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field with 15+ years of experience or MS with 20+ years of equivalent experience. Minimum 10 years of CMC experience in early phase drug development. Additional Skills/Preferences
Proven track record of building and leading high-performing teams. Strong culture-change leadership, excellent written and verbal communication, extensive external network, and teamwork/collaboration skills. Experience leading large teams; expertise in project planning/organization/management; talent assessment and recruiting; knowledge of the drug development lifecycle; patent-related experience.
