Overview

The Johns Hopkins University Barnstormers are seeking a Director for their Fall 2025 production of Emma by Kate Hamill (based on the novel by Jane Austen). This entirely student-run theatre group will perform in Arellano Theatre, a 115-seat space on the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus in Baltimore, MD. The Director should be collaborative and flexible, working closely with student actors and technical designers to foster creativity and a student-led vision. Auditions are tentatively September 19–21, with rehearsals beginning immediately afterward. Performances are November 14 at 8pm, November 15 at 8pm, and November 16 at 3pm. The salary is $2,200 with up to a $500 travel stipend.

Responsibilities The Director will:

Collaborate with student actors and technical designers to develop a unified production concept.

Foster a positive, creative, and inclusive environment.

Guide the production through design meetings and rehearsals, aligning with the student-led vision.

Additional Information The job is located in Baltimore, MD. Housing is not included, but assistance in finding affordable housing in the area is available for out-of-towners.

Typical rehearsal schedule: six days a week, generally 3 hours on weeknights (6–7 pm) and a longer afternoon rehearsal on the weekend day with fewer student conflicts.

The Barnstormers are entirely extracurricular; students participate alongside their coursework.

Rehearsals begin the day after the cast list is finalized, with design meetings held beforehand. The director may not need to be in Baltimore until auditions.

Mission The Johns Hopkins University Barnstormers is an entirely student-run organization that has provided quality theatre to campus and the greater Baltimore community for over a hundred years. The group dedicates itself to offering creative outlets and learning opportunities for student actors and designers who balance theater with academic and professional commitments. Each year, one straight play and one musical are produced, with a professional director contributing to the learning experience through collaboration and shared expertise.
