You will help move therapies through preclinical research, positioning them for clinic readiness. The successful candidate will contribute their expertise to a dynamic team focused on discovering disease-modifying therapeutics for patients in a fast-paced environment. Senior leader of the legal function at Septerna, including in-house and third-party work to efficiently manage the company’s legal activities and business risk. Manage and direct general corporate matters, including SEC reporting, disclosure compliance, corporate governance, capital markets transactions (debt/equity), licenses and collaboration agreements, CRO/CMO agreements, clinical trial agreements, employment law, regulatory matters, risk management, and general contract management. Lead global patent strategy and IP management, conduct freedom-to-operate reviews, invention harvesting, due diligence, patentability assessments, and related matters to support scientific and business development teams. Manage in-house paralegal and other legal staff as the company scales across corporate and IP matters. Lead enterprise risk management program, including company-wide training and compliance (e.g., IP practices, insider trading, employment matters, interactions with health care providers). QUALIFICATIONS Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school and admitted to practice in at least one state and before the USPTO. Strong undergraduate/graduate background in biology or chemistry preferred. 5+ years managing in-house legal for a public biopharma company and 7+ years prosecuting and preparing technically relevant patent applications. Ideally, experience at a top law firm and in-house biopharma experience. Experience in SEC reporting, corporate governance, licensing/collaboration agreements, and employment law. Desire for career trajectory toward General Counsel/Chief Legal Officer preferred. Experience advising CEO and board on critical business and regulatory matters; strong communication and collaboration with scientific, commercial, and business development teams. Extensive experience with IP ownership terms, patent prosecution and enforcement, indemnification, trade secrets, confidentiality, and related IP terms. General corporate and IP litigation experience preferred, including experience with outside counsel on disputes, inter partes reviews, and patent-related actions. Strong organizational skills and ability to lead cross-functional projects. The anticipated salary range for candidates based in South San Francisco, CA is $340,000 - $380,000.
