Director of ML/AI Platform Operations - Evinova

Location: Gaithersburg, MD

Evinova delivers market-leading digital health solutions that are science-based, evidence-led, and human experience-driven. We are building a new health-tech business – Evinova, a fully-owned subsidiary of AstraZeneca Group. This role leads the ML/AI Platform Operations team and drives the design, deployment, and operational excellence of the ML/AI data and computational AWS ecosystem to accelerate science-led innovations.

Overview The Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence Operations team (ML/AI Ops) is a newly formed group responsible for architecting and operating our ML/AI data and cloud infrastructure. The team partners with data scientists and AI engineers to implement, deploy, and monitor AI solutions, manage cloud resources, and automate operations via infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD pipelines. The Director will establish ML/AI governance, drive cost-benefit analyses of foundation models, and support strategic decisions across the organization.

Accountabilities

Lead the design, development, and maintenance of our machine learning and AI platform.

Ensure scalability, performance, and reliability of the platform to support a growing customer base.

Act as the Product Manager of the platform to create a scalable and sustainable platform for customers.

Oversee day-to-day operations of the AI and ML development platform.

Ensure availability, scalability, and reliability of software and infrastructure components.

Collaborate with Engineering and DevOps teams to maintain server infrastructure and optimize performance.

Implement and manage CI/CD pipelines for seamless deployment of AI/ML applications.

Lead by example in building high-performance, mission-focused teams founded on trust and growth mindset.

Design and implement resilient cloud ML/AI operational capabilities to improve learnability, flexibility, extendibility, interoperability, and scalability.

Drive cost efficiency and risk mitigation with data-driven analytics for systems we build, manage, and govern.

Team Management

Recruit, mentor, and lead a global team of engineers (4 to 6).

Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning.

Set clear goals, monitor progress, and provide regular feedback.

Infrastructure Maintenance

Monitor and maintain data storage, compute resources, and networking infrastructure.

Identify and address infrastructure bottlenecks, security vulnerabilities, and performance issues.

Stay informed on emerging technologies and recommend upgrades to the platform.

Quality, Security and Compliance

Implement and enforce security protocols to protect sensitive data.

Ensure compliance with data privacy regulations and industry standards (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA).

Coordinate with security teams for regular vulnerability assessments and audits.

Implement rigorous testing and QA processes to maintain high product quality.

Resource Allocation

Work with AI/ML teams to understand resource requirements.

Allocate resources efficiently, balancing compute needs with cost considerations.

Optimize resource utilization to reduce operational expenses.

Documentation and Training

Create and maintain documentation on platform configuration and processes.

Provide training and support to development teams on platform usage and optimization.

Essential Skills/Experience

HS Diploma and 8 years of experience in Engineering/IT solutions OR BA/BS and 5 years of experience, or equivalent capabilities.

Minimum 5 years in ML/AI engineering.

Proven track record designing and implementing end-to-end ML/AI workflows.

Experience leading diverse teams to achieve objectives through automation.

Ability to coach, mentor, and develop teams.

Deep understanding of DSLC and shepherding data science projects from inception to production within the platform (AWS TypeScript CDK, Argo CD, Helm, Kubernetes, Fargate, Lambdas).

Expertise in RAG, AWS Bedrock, Sagemaker, Lex, OpenSearch for AI/automation solutions.

Experience with GenAI frameworks/tools like DSPy, Letta, LlamaIndex, LangChain.

Advanced coding skills in Python/JavaScript/TypeScript.

CI/CD and cloud operations experience, with data science/ML focus.

Desirable Skills/Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of relevant ML/AI industry experience or equivalent capabilities.

Total Rewards The annual base pay ranges from $167,772.00 to $251,658.00. Additional compensation may include short-term incentives, equity-based long-term incentives, retirement contributions, and eligibility for other benefits as described in the offer.
