Creating a healthy, disease-free environment for Indiana's animals is supported by BOAH's team of veterinarians and animal health inspectors who investigate outbreaks and advise on disease prevention. Role Overview

Serves as a subject matter expert for HACCP, SSOP, PHIS, labeling, processing, facility requirements and sampling programs. Works with agency leadership to ensure regulated establishments produce products that are safe for human food, unadulterated, accurately labeled, and compliant with all applicable laws. Represents BOAH in liaison contacts with plant owners, Indiana Department of Health and local health departments, FDA, FSIS, and food safety laboratories. Serves as an Enforcement, Investigation and Analysis Officer (EIAO) with responsibilities including evaluating activities in the Meat and Poultry Inspection Division related to slaughter and processing sanitation and HACCP practices; conducting comprehensive food safety assessments of meat and poultry establishments; assessing HACCP design and validity; and advising on procedures to maintain program compliance with FSIS requirements. The EIAO functions as the subject matter expert, consulting with staff, clarifying procedures, and interpreting requirements. The EIAO also helps evaluate work quality and enforce corrective actions. The role may include input into establishing inspection procedures for program compliance. What You’ll Need For Success

Requirements to be considered for employment include: A Bachelor Degree, preferred, from an accredited University or College with a minimum of 30 semester hours in biological science, chemistry, food science, nutrition, microbiology, agriculture, administration, mathematics, engineering, environmental health, public health, or a related field. Completion of state-provided training to become certified by USDA FSIS as an EIAO. Successful completion of USDA training courses related to livestock and poultry slaughter, inspection methods, further processing and labeling, and ready-to-eat/SS, including coursework and exams. Extensive knowledge of Meat and Poultry Inspection as described by Indiana and federal law. Extensive knowledge of and ability to apply federal and state laws and policies related to food protection. Knowledge of food protection principles and practices, including bacteriology, microbiology, chemistry, food science, engineering, and computer technology. Specialized knowledge of inspection equipment and procedures (e.g., testing controls, temperature/holding time, thermometer calibrations). Ability to review plans and drawings of facility construction and layout and to recommend changes. Specialized knowledge of inspection and investigation methods and techniques. Ability to observe, evaluate, and recognize sanitation conditions, and to prepare reports documenting findings. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with ability to interact with individuals or groups. Proficiency with personal computers and software applications. Ability to obtain a valid driver’s license and to travel as required. Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation. Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports
