Public Relations Role

Plans, directs, monitors, and evaluates all internal and external media and public relations functions for the Area Command to ensure that The Salvation Army maintains a positive and professional image in the community; serves as Public Information Officer for all disaster services of the Area Command; serves as liaison to all media ensuring the desired message is communicated; takes photographs and writes articles covering Salvation Army events. Key Responsibilities: Supervisory Responsibilities (20%)

- Provides hands-on leadership to communications staff by setting clear expectations, offering coaching and feedback, and ensuring high-quality execution of all projects. Oversees task management, performance reviews, and professional development to maintain an efficient, mission-aligned team. Public Relations Responsibilities (30%)

- Leads all media and public relations efforts to raise visibility for The Salvation Army's programs, events, and impact. Working with the Public Relations Associate and Sr Director of Development, writes and distributes press releases, captures stories and photography, produces newsletters and reports, and oversees brand-aligned messaging across channels, including social media and internal publications. Community Relations and Liaison Responsibilities (30%)

- Serves as the primary connector between The Salvation Army and local civic groups, nonprofits, media outlets, and public partners. Builds trusted relationships, identifies new opportunities for community engagement, and represents the organization through public speaking and outreach that promotes awareness and collaboration. Strategic Planning and Evaluation Responsibilities (20%)

- Develops and implements local media and community engagement strategies, tracks and evaluates results, and ensures alignment with organizational goals. Leads response planning for crisis communications and continuously refines tactics to enhance visibility, outreach, and impact. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write and communicate in the English language effectively. Ability to work under the pressure of deadlines and time constraints. Ability to speak before large groups in person, by radio and television. Ability and willingness to conduct all duties in accordance with the ministry of the organization and its Christian principles; conducts all communications and job duties with the highest level of professionalism. Duties are usually performed seated. Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking. Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.) Work may be performed in an office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like but not limited to the office environment.
