Overview
Refuse Truck Driver role at Personnel Board of Jefferson County. Merits System position responsible for the efficient and safe operation of a refuse truck to collect household refuse along designated routes. Responsibilities include inspecting refuse trucks for maintenance, operating a refuse truck along public roadways, overseeing the safety and work of a crew of Laborers or Refuse Collectors, and documenting daily activities. Employees receive assigned routes from a supervisor and plan how to most efficiently complete the route. Work is reviewed through daily activity reports and route inspections by a supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications
The following job-related qualifications are required for employment consideration for this position:
- Class B CDL.
- Experience operating equipment requiring a Class B CDL.
- Experience following maps, GPS, or navigation instructions.
- Experience conducting pre-trip inspections on heavy duty equipment/trucks.
Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications are desirable and may be considered by a hiring agency when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in later steps of the selection process:
- Experience operating a loader.
- Experience leading a crew (e.g., directing and reviewing work of crew members, ensuring safety).
Typical Job Duties
- Operates a refuse truck and associated equipment along designated routes to retrieve refuse.
- Directs the work of crew members to ensure efficiency and safety during collection.
- Maintains refuse truck operations by performing routine inspections, keeping the vehicle clean, and scheduling maintenance.
- Operates a rear-loading packer to remove waste along established routes.
- Operates truck accessory equipment (e.g., hydraulic lifts, compressors) used in trash collection.
- Communicates with the dispatcher or supervisor via two-way radio.
- Reports uncollectible refuse and safety issues (e.g., dead animals, paint, hazardous conditions) for proper action.
- Delivers refuse to the landfill for disposal and weighs loads on the landfill scale as required.
Physical Demands
This position involves physical exertion for extended periods of operating a refuse truck or standing. Occasional lifting of items weighing up to 50 lbs may be required.
Work Environment
Work is primarily outdoors at residential neighborhoods, landfills, and similar sites. May involve exposure to hazardous conditions, heavy equipment, inclement weather, and foul odors from waste.
