Position Overview

Assists the Director of Dental Health Programs and/or Public Health Hygienist at the WVU HSC, Eastern's Division's School of Dental Program. Provides office assistance in preparing paperwork for follow-up after school visits and delivers oral health education to school-age children.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Certification, and/or Licensure

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience

  • Successful completion of a dental assisting or surgical assisting program OR one year of dental assisting or surgical assisting experience, which can substitute for formal education in dental/surgical assisting.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following are general responsibilities and may include other duties as assigned:

  1. Assist providers during patient examinations and treatments as instructed.
  2. Greet patients and prepare them for exams by ensuring proper seating, draping, and alignment.
  3. Apply or assist in the application of rubber dam isolation.
  4. Transfer dental instruments and supplies during treatment.
  5. Maintain a clean, dry oral operating field using high-velocity evacuation systems.
  6. Prepare, mix, measure, and dispense materials as instructed during procedures.
  7. Place, expose, and process images.
  8. Ensure all equipment is sanitized and disinfected.
  9. Obtain supplies and instruments from stock.
  10. Prepare and arrange instruments, materials, and medications for patient care.
  11. Ensure sterilization of instrumentation.
  12. Return instruments and equipment to appropriate areas.
  13. Set up and assist with specialized patient care procedures.
  14. Record treatment details electronically and obtain provider approvals.
  15. Provide administrative support to meet operational needs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must meet Department of Labor's medium duty standard (exerting up to 50 pounds occasionally).
  • Capable of bending, stooping, reaching, and standing/walking for an 8-10 hour shift.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • May work various shifts based on departmental and patient needs.
  • May need to travel between facilities.
