The Asset Recovery Manager oversees the strategic and technical operations of the Asset Recovery department, ensuring effective charge-off management, recovery efforts, and legal compliance. This position minimizes financial loss and aligns with the Credit Union’s charge-off forecast. The Asset Recovery Manager collaborates with the Portfolio Analytics Manager to ensure data accuracy, drives operational improvements, and oversees third-party vendors, including legal firms, collection agencies, and auction partners. This role represents the Credit Union in litigation matters and is accountable for recovery performance across charged-off portfolios.

Responsibilities

Strategic & Financial Oversight: Lead the execution of recovery strategies to support forecasted charge-offs, collections performance, and loss mitigation goals. Reconcile monthly charge-offs and recoveries with accounting and forecast models.

Data and Analytics: Partner with the Portfolio Analytics Manager to validate recovery data, charge-off trends, and static pool performance; prepare and present recovery insights and performance reports to senior leadership.

Leadership & Department Management: Hire, train, and lead the Asset Recovery team; develop job descriptions to align with department growth; foster a high-performance, compliant culture; ensure cross-training on complex topics (legal claims, liens, garnishments, judgments, asset disposition).

Vendor & Legal Relationship Management: Manage third-party vendors (law firms, recovery agencies, skip tracing partners, auto auctions); approve legal billing and oversee vendor compliance; represent the Credit Union in court proceedings and liaise with internal/external legal counsel.

Systems & Technical Process Management: Develop recovery-related systems to enable efficient, accurate workflows; collaborate on process improvements and reporting dashboards; monitor data entry and automation for accuracy.

Compliance & Operational Integrity: Ensure adherence to FDCPA, FCRA, UCC, TCPA, bankruptcy codes; oversee IRS Form 1099-Cs, credit bureau reporting, and court-required documentation; manage audits and maintain internal controls and data privacy.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Loss Mitigation, Lending, Loan Servicing, Legal, Audit, and Member Experience to align recovery strategy; participate in workout committees and policy discussions; contribute to policies, procedures, and training materials.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and communication skills; strong organizational abilities and attention to detail.

Proven leadership, team-building, and mentoring capabilities; ability to manage multiple initiatives and work under pressure.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office and recovery platforms (e.g., AKUVO or equivalent); ability to interpret complex data sets and apply financial acumen.

Experience managing conflict, escalations, and legal/regulatory considerations in recovery contexts.

Knowledge

Working knowledge of financial forecasting, recovery reconciliations, and performance analytics.

Expertise in recovery laws and legal processes (court procedures, bankruptcy, litigation, asset seizure).

Experience with third-party vendor management and recovery contract oversight.

Education and Experience

Minimum 6 years of experience in collections, asset recovery, repossession management, or legal recovery.

At least 3 years in a leadership or strategic supervisory role with budget, reporting, or legal oversight responsibilities.

Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, legal studies, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and extensive experience.

Physical Requirements Occasional court appearances; prolonged sitting and computer work; periodic travel for vendor site visits and legal proceedings; ability to lift 20 pounds.

Compensation $92,668.80 - $115,836.00 Annually (DOE)
