Overview

This position serves as the Therapeutic Radiologic Technologist for the Radiation Oncology department within the Washington DC VA Medical Center VA Health Care System. Responsibilities

Demonstrates thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology, pathology, medical terminology, oncology, radiobiology, radiation physics, radiation oncology techniques, radiation safety and the psychosocial aspects of cancer. Possesses a working knowledge of consultation, simulation, treatment planning and treatment procedures. Interprets treatment plans generated by dosimetry and delivers the prescribed dose using accurate field parameters, relevant treatment protocols, and immobilization devices. Follows current guidelines, methods, and standards to perform Quality Assurance (QA) procedures of all treatment machines and CT scanner prior to daily business hours. Alerts appropriate staff if values fall outside set parameters. Operates complex equipment including Varian True Beam linear accelerator, ARIA, record and verify systems, electronic portal imaging, 3-D conformal therapy systems, multi-leaf collimators, IMRT, On-Board Imaging, Cone Beam CT, and SBRT. Administers ionizing radiation treatments from simple to highly complex to treat disease. Performs quality control procedures for radiation therapy including weekly chart checks for data accuracy and completion. Observes patients during procedures, communicates exam preparations, and coordinates scheduling of simulation, planning, and treatment procedures. Demonstrates knowledge of hazardous materials in handling and fabrication of special molds, blocks, and compensators. Provides optimal patient simulation position sets-ups that can be reproduced for daily treatments, properly identifies patients prior to simulation and each daily treatment, and prioritizes scheduled patients while remaining flexible for emergencies. Ensures accurate computer operations and data input/output for CPRS, ARIA, and related systems; maintains patient data integrity. Collaborates with the radiation oncology team in a professional, respectful manner to support effective operations. Work Schedule

Heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs), straight pulling/pushing, hand-over-hand pushing, reaching above shoulder level, use of fingers and both hands, walking/standing/crawling (up to 5 hours), bending (up to 3 hours), rapid mental and muscular coordination, depth perception, color discrimination, emotional and mental stability. Completion of an accredited therapeutic radiologic technology program; ARRT in Radiation Therapy (T) certification. Certification:

ARRT in Radiation Therapy (T) is required. Temporary appointments may be allowed for graduates under certain conditions as described in VA standards. Additional notes on grandfathering and certification requirements are described in VA Qualification Standards. Grade Determinations

One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, directly related to the position. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

Skill in machine warm-up procedures and QA, with adherence to radiation safety standards. Ability to perform patient chart reviews using electronic medical records and treatment delivery systems. Ability to perform all basic and complex CT simulations, immobilization design, data transfer for planning, and accurate documentation. Ability to operate On-Board Imaging to interpret complex images. Assignments

Advanced staff TRT duties at the required level, including emergency on-call treatments and simple monitor unit calculations; CT simulations, troubleshooting, and maintenance of treatment rooms and equipment. Education Note
