Job Description:
Pennington Biomedical Research Center , a world-renowned academic research institute of Louisiana State University, is seeking a Director of Institutional Relations in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The Director of Institutional Relations will work closely with the Senior Director of Institutional Relations to facilitate and enhance Pennington Biomedicals relationships with government entities and officials, higher education institutions, and external partners.The Director will contribute to the institutions legislative activities by monitoring legislative bills filed, preparing communications, coordinating events, and supporting institutional outreach efforts under the purview of the Institutional Relations office. Major Responsibilities Monitor state and federal legislative activity and provide timely updates to institutional leadership.
Prepare briefing materials, reports, correspondence, and talking points to support executive and legislative engagement.
Develop and maintain stakeholder contact databases; coordinate events, visits, and tours that strengthen government and community relations.
Collaborate with leadership in meetings with elected officials, policymakers, institutional partners, and community stakeholders.
Participate in advocacy initiatives, community events, and outreach activities that advance Pennington Biomedicals legislative and institutional priorities.
Represent the Office of Institutional Relations within the LSU System and at selected external events to promote the organizations mission.
Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of Pennington Biomedicals government relations strategies.
Build and maintain productive relationships with alumni groups, community organizations, funders, and public officials.
Contribute to risk assessment of potential legislation and assist with strategies to protect the institutions interests.
Handle sensitive information with discretion.
Serve as a liaison between Institutional Relations and internal staff or scientists engaging with external audiences.
Foster collaboration within the Institutional Relations team and across departments.
Required Qualifications Bachelors degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Communications, or a closely related field
or
five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in government relations, public policy, or legislative affairs.
Experience working with the legislative and executive branches of state and/or federal government, with strong knowledge of legislative and regulatory processes.
Demonstrated ability to work independently as a self-starter and to achieve results with minimal supervision.
Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex policy issues for diverse audiences.
Proven ability to manage multiple tasks, projects, and competing priorities while meeting deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications Four (4) to six (6) years of experience in public affairs, policy, higher education, or government
Experience representing an organization before legislators, agencies, or external stakeholders at the state and/or federal level.
Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining relationships with elected officials, community leaders, and institutional partners.
Ability to analyze proposed legislation or regulations for potential impacts and to contribute to the development of advocacy strategies.
Experience coordinating or leading advocacy campaigns, coalition-building efforts, or stakeholder engagement initiatives.
Familiarity with higher education, biomedical research, or public health policy environments.
