City of Winona part-time firefighters are trained to assist career firefighters in combating and extinguishing fires; rescue operations; hazardous materials response; providing medical care; operation and maintenance of fire department equipment and apparatus, and public education. Assignments made to employees are made in detail and the work will usually be closely guided by a career firefighter or captain.
Part-time firefighters are required to learn and participate in the operation of apparatus and the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may require strenuous exertion in smoke and cramped surroundings. The most difficult and responsible areas of activity are firefighting and rescue/EMS work. The major portion of time is consumed by studying and practicing drill methods and techniques of modern firefighting and EMS work.
This position offers paid training and hands-on skills to prepare the candidate for taking the Minnesota Firefighter I and II skills assessment in May 2026. Training begins in January.

High school diploma or certificate of equivalency.
Valid Driver’s License.
Emergency Medical Responder (First Responder) certificate or acquire within 12-months after date of hire. Training will be provided by Winona Fire Department.
Firefighter training in accordance with NFPA 1403 Standards or acquire within one year after date of hire. Training will be provided by Winona Fire Department.
Reside within 20 minutes of Winona city limits or relocate within six months after date of hire.
Note: Firefighters must pass a drug screen and receive medical clearance to perform job duties prior to being hired. The City of Winona will coordinate exams if you receive a job offer.
