Sr. User Experience Designer role at AppFolio. Description: We’re AppFolio, a cloud-based platform powering the real estate industry. The Sr. UX Designer for Voice AI will design intuitive, business-focused voice experiences that streamline interactions for property managers and support automation where it adds efficiency and frees time for important connections. The ideal candidate thrives in a highly collaborative, Agile/Lean UX environment, working with Software Engineers, QA Engineers, and Product Managers to build innovative AI-driven solutions.
Responsibilities
Lead the design of voice AI experiences from exploration to polished conversational flows, ensuring interactions are intuitive and aligned with business needs
Help define and evolve conversational design guidelines and patterns within the broader design system
Collaborate with Engineering and Product Management, and the UX Team, to ensure a consistent, high-quality user experience across complex workflows
Develop conversation models, personas, and scripts that balance clarity, efficiency, and brand voice
Contribute to implementing a comprehensive Design Strategy, and meet usability benchmarks and KPIs
Partner with Product Management on roadmap and strategy, advocating for end users while balancing business needs
Address complex design challenges through LeanUX activities such as design studios, provisional personas, and story mapping
Collaborate with team members during sprints, including impromptu discussions and pairing with engineers on design
Support designers and teams with wireframes, flow diagrams, rapid prototypes, and visual design to communicate and validate ideas
Facilitate user research to test prototypes and conduct usability testing for conversational interfaces
Promote a cohesive user experience through consistent UI patterns
Inspire teams to go beyond usability toward user delight through tone, pacing, and micro-interactions in voice design
Participate in and help drive comprehensive Design Strategy with usability benchmarks for conversational products
Knowledge and Skills / Qualifications
Strong portfolio focusing on voice interfaces, conversational AI, or multimodal experiences
Experience designing natural, human-centered conversations including turn-taking, error recovery, and edge cases
Understanding of voice UI usability principles (brevity, clarity, cognitive load)
Basic knowledge of speech technologies (NLU/NLP, TTS, ASR) and their influence on design
Understanding of cross-channel experiences (voice, text, web, mobile) and continuity across them
Awareness of human-in-the-loop patterns and smooth handoffs
Exposure to large language models (LLMs) and multimodal capabilities
Knowledge of accessibility standards for voice and multimodal interfaces
Experience with UX deliverables (wireframes, user flows, mockups, prototypes) and selecting appropriate tools
Knowledge of Agile UX and Lean UX in collaborative environments
Proficiency in low-fidelity tools (e.g., FigJam) and advanced prototyping tools (e.g., Figma)
Excellent communication and facilitation skills to clarify problems and rally stakeholders around the voice experience
Minimum of 5 years in UX-focused roles, with at least 2 years in voice/conversational design or related area
Compensation & Benefits The base salary/hourly wage for this role is typically $125,600–$157,000. The actual base salary/hourly wage will depend on factors including skills, education, and experience. Base pay is one component of a Total Rewards package; other benefits and bonuses/commissions may apply depending on role and employment type. Regular full-time employees are eligible for benefits.
