Morningstar Development Program for Technologists
Morningstar seeks individuals who are smart, creative, hard-working, curious, and passionate about their work. We built the Morningstar Development Program to prepare recent college graduates for successful, long-term careers at Morningstar. Throughout this two-year program, you will be placed in a cohort where you'll receive ongoing career development, networking, mentoring, training opportunities, apprenticeship program opportunities, and exposure to different areas of the business to help you succeed. The Morningstar Development Program for Technologists is accepting applicants with zero to two years of full-time work experience. We are looking for self-starters who see technology as an art, understands business goals, and can build scalable, flexible software solutions by taking technical direction and applying modern software development and quality practices. You've mastered the technologies, languages, or development environments you've been working withwhichever they may beand you will be able to learn any technology or language that's needed. Job responsibilities may include: Design and develop Java, .NET, and Objective-C applications to be flexible, scalable, and robust; collaborate on object-oriented designs, domain modeling, and quality assurance Contribute to ongoing training sessions, stretch projects, and roundtable discussions while developing a strong foundation of knowledge to use Develop critical skills and areas of expertise that will prepare you for advancement into positions across the organization Adhere to good Agile practices such as test-driven development, continuous integration, and automated deployment Write and execute automated functional and unit tests Working with cross-functional teams across the globe Analyze and address production issues; build instrumentation and operational readiness into the system architecture Act as a software guardian by taking ownership of nonfunctional elements, architectural direction, and the quality of the code, while addressing technical debt Support architectural, design, and engineering practices to launch products to Morningstar's private cloud Location: Chicago Start Date: July 6th, 2026 What we look for: A bachelor's degree completed no later than May 2026 in accounting, business, finance or other relevant discipline preferred Proficient in programming languages such as Java, Python, or JavaScript Team-oriented with effective communication and collaboration skills Exposure to software development lifecycle and object-oriented design principles Familiarity with Agile methodologies (e.g., Scrum, XP) and clean coding practices Basic understanding of testing strategies like TDD and tools for CI/CD Interest in open-source technologies and community engagement Comfortable working in UNIX/Linux environments and with SQL databases (e.g., MySQL, SQL Server) Must possess unrestricted right to work in the U.S. in this position A resume is required to apply. Morningstar's hybrid work environment gives you the opportunity to work remotely and collaborate in-person each week. While some positions are available as fully remote, we've found that we're at our best when we're purposely together on a regular basis, typically three days each week.
