The UC Berkeley Library comprises 20 campus libraries with a budget of about $69 million, a collection of more than 14 million volumes, about 270 full-time employees and nearly 700 student employees each year. The Library offers extensive collections in all formats and robust services to connect users with those collections and build research skills. The library partners with other UC campuses and the systemwide California Digital Library. The University Librarian oversees central administration for the Library. Position Summary: The Senior Security Officer plays a key role in ensuring the safety and security of library users, staff, and collections across multiple locations (Bancroft, Doe, Moffitt, and Main Stacks). Responsibilities include controlling access to facilities, monitoring security systems, checking IDs, responding to emergencies, and assisting patrons with directions and information needs. This role supervises student security staff at Bancroft Library and supports hiring and training across the department. It also provides backup to the Security Supervisor and Facilities Manager to maintain a secure and welcoming environment. Responsibilities Recruit, train, and supervise student employees, delivering guidance on security protocols, customer service, and emergency response. Conduct regular student performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback to maintain high service quality. Patrolling: conduct routine patrols of the Doe-Moffitt complex to safeguard property, identify security risks, and document incidents; respond to theft, violence, or policy violations and ensure timely reporting. Access Control: oversee entry to the library complex (Doe, Bancroft, Main Stacks, Moffitt) with primary responsibility for Bancroft; verify identities, enforce policies, monitor security systems. Documentation: maintain incident reports, security logs, daily activity reports, and emergency procedures; review and enhance security protocols. Emergency Response: coordinate with campus emergency services and lead safety drills for staff and students to ensure preparedness.
Required Qualifications
Strong interpersonal skills for interactions with colleagues, staff, patrons, and those who may cause disruptions. Ability to maintain professionalism and address behaviors that threaten safety and order. Commitment to public service and maintaining a safe, respectful library environment. Ability to multitask, work in teams and independently, and proactively complete projects. Proficiency with computer systems and electronic security platforms (Software House, C-Cure 9000 Alarm, CCTV, camera systems). Experience hiring, training, and supervising student employees, including conducting performance evaluations. High school diploma or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
Security Guard Card License (BSIS). First Aid, CPR and AED certifications.
Salary & Benefits
