Construction Estimator
Location: Milwaukee, WI Industry: Utility & Civil Construction About The Role
We're looking for a skilled Construction Estimator to join our team and support bidding efforts across utility and civil construction projects. This role is essential in preparing accurate, competitive estimates that reflect real-world field conditions and labor productivity. You'll work closely with project managers, foremen, and leadership to ensure estimates are aligned with scope, schedule, and budget expectations. Key Responsibilities
Review plans, specs, and customer standards to define project scope and identify key cost drivers. Attend pre-bid walkthroughs and meetings to gather site-specific information and clarify scope. Perform detailed quantity take-offs and develop cost breakdowns for labor, materials, and equipment. Prepare estimates for unit price, lump sum, and time & expense (T&E) contracts. Collaborate with field leadership to validate production rates and crew sizing. Maintain and update unit pricing databases and upload estimates into project management software. Coordinate with accounting and management to ensure customer T&E rates are current and accurate. Understand and apply union labor agreements to develop labor cost models. Submit bids and proposals after internal review and approval. Identify value engineering opportunities and cost-saving alternatives during the estimating process. Support continuous improvement of estimating tools and workflows. Required Qualifications
Minimum 3 years of estimating experience in utility or civil construction. Strong understanding of construction methods, labor productivity, and project sequencing. Proficiency with estimating software and digital take-off tools. Ability to read and interpret civil, electrical, mechanical, and architectural drawings. Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and familiarity with Access or similar project management platforms. Knowledge of construction safety standards and jobsite protocols. Preferred Qualifications
High school diploma required; technical degree or equivalent field experience preferred. Experience with site development, underground utilities, or electrical infrastructure. Strong communication skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively. High attention to detail and commitment to procedural accuracy. Positive safety mindset and strong personal integrity. Work Environment
Primarily office-based with occasional site visits for pre-bid assessments and field coordination. Fast-paced, team-oriented environment with close collaboration between estimators, foremen, and project managers. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $70000.00 - $100000.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
